Все эти определения девушки-мечты Болливуда 70-х годов испаряются из головы, когда вы встречаете ее вживую. But shooting on location in Chandni Chowk is not possible for prolonged periods as normal life is disrupted. We did shoot on location, but only for a few days. We did the rest of the film in Sambhar, which is a two and a half hours’ drive from Jaipur. We took over the entire town and recreated old Delhi there. Though the town is deserted, it did have ancestral homes of the people who lived there. They served our purpose beautifully. • Filmmakers seem to be fascinated with Delhi. That’s because Delhi is one of the oldest cities of the world. It’s a microcosm of India. It embodies the spirit of older cities like Jaipur, Hyderabad, Amritsar and Patna. For me there’s no native village. Only Chandni Chowk. It has taken me two other films to get back to my roots in Delhi 6. This would have been my first film. But I am glad I made the other ones. I learnt so much during Aks and Rang De Basanti that today I know a bit more about cinema than I did earlier. • Waheedaji seems to be your all-time favourite actress. Yes. There are no two ways about it. Initially, Waheedaji was reluctant to do the film. But when I threatened to build the film’s set in front of her house in Mumbai and shoot the whole film there, she agreed. I must have done something good in my previous life to get to work with her in two films. I also got to work with extraordinary actors like Pavan Malhotra, Divya Dutta , Supriya Pathak, Abhishek and Sonam for the first time. • And Rishi Kapoor? I don’t have words to express his talent. He is so fabulous and complete. You wonder how he does it. These wonderful actors are the heart and soul of the film. I’ll cherish the experience of working with them forever. • How important is the background score for a film? It can make an ordinary scene extraordinary. On the other hand, it can also kill an extraordinary scene. But the background music doesn’t end my post-production work. Somehow a film always gets snatched away before it is ready. There’s so much A R Rahman wants to do for Delhi 6. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra • How satisfying has Delhi 6 been? Of my three films so far this has been the most challenging one. It’s a difficult subject and a rough journey. Delhi 6 works on the conscious and subconscious level. I still haven’t completed the journey. • Rang De Basanti is an impossible act to encore. It’s a fact about my career that I can’t escape. It’s part of my growth as a filmmaker. It shifted emotions within me. Luckily for me there are no similarities between Rang De Basanti and Delhi 6. • Delhi 6 is your most autobiographical film? I spent quite a bit of my growing up years in Chandni Chowk. In Rang De Basanti, I drew experiences from my college days. In Delhi 6, I have drawn parallels from my childhood. As you grow older, you reflexively gravitate towards your roots. But it’s a very contemporary story which features the ambience, adventures, tastes and smells from my childhood. • Will audiences find Delhi 6 entertaining? The genre is comedy-romance-social drama. Our job is to tell a story. But you have to draw audiences into the story. Entertainment is often confused with momentary pleasure. But cinematic entertainment is far deeper. His new film, Raaz - The Mystery Continues, is full-on horror, co-starring Kangana Ranaut and Adhyayan Suman. The film is directed by Emraan's cousin, Mohit Suri (of Zeher, Woh Lamhe and Kalyug fame) He talks to Nithya Ramani about the film, and why he thinks the Bhatts exploit him. What is Raaz - The Mystery Continues about? It is a sequel, in a way. The same production house made the original Raaz six years ago. It was a horror film, and a big hit. We wanted to make a new kind of horror -- something people haven't seen before. So we thought we will take the brand ahead and call it Raaz - The Mystery Continues. We have never seen a mainstream, big budget horror film (in India). We have tried to build the film around fear and how it can scare people in Mumbai, where there is not much superstition. People in cities don't believe in ghosts. We have heard such stories only in rural areas. So we developed this idea, and came up with Raaz. Also, what is important in a horror film, and which this film has, is a story with human drama. Tell us about your role. I play a painter, who believes in ghosts. He is fine-tuned to the world of the supernatural, and is a medium. He carries messages from people to the supernatural world and vice versa. In order to make this visually appealing, we made this man an artist. He happens to paint a particular girl, who is a model. He believes that something really bad is going to happen to her. Do you believe in the supernatural? I have known many people who have lost their loved ones and have tried to make contact with them. The kind of responses they've got is very difficult to explain. So there must be some kind of reality in this. I personally cannot say much on this, as I have not met these people. We have spoken to a few people as part of the research and have learnt that there is some truth in what they know. Did you ever want to make contact with the supernatural? Yes, at one point in time when I lost a dear friend. I tried to make contact with him and when you can't see something or someone and things happen, you can't negate it. This is your first horror film. How was the experience? I think working with a director who wanted to shoot the film in places that had superstitions attached to it, that created an eerie atmosphere. Most of the scenes were shot at night. It sometimes gets difficult to finish the shoot, and go back and sleep well. We had to cut out many scenes because they were either too graphic or too scary for public viewing. But if I had it my way, this would have been my first film. I love horror. I have grown up watching horror films. Mohit and I would watch horror films together. Why a horror film? Why not? Everybody is doing run-of-the-mill stuff. Here, you get an opportunity to do something that you believe in and that is truly different. My films have been mostly different. I have been dying in most of my films! I have always been fascinated by the darker side and Raaz gives me an opportunity to explore that. That is why I was excited when I was offered this script. How do you think people will react to this film? Raaz will change the way people look at horror films. I expect a new audience, who don't generally watch horror films, to watch it. People usually shy away from horror films because they find it scary. We want to give them something more. They will be able to relate to the characters. The film has a great love story and superb music. It's a good blend of all these things. How would you compare horror films of the past with Raaz? I don't want to comment on past horror films. But honestly, I haven't gotten scared (by them). There was a similar trend in Hollywood in the 1980s. What would you say about director Mohit Suri? He has definitely matured as a director. He adapts himself to the environment and has a good sound sensibility. He makes his films look believable. That's what I like about him. In an interview, Mohit had said that you hold your emotions back. I do not come across as an emotional person in reality. As a child, I have been influenced by a lot of foreign films, I haven't watched many Hindi films. Their way of acting is understated. And that suits me better. It is actually what you don't show on screen (that the audiences like). The audience is very intelligent. You can cross geographical borders if you emote minimally because they can relate with it. No one cries with a man who cries on screen. When you choke on screen, that is when you move the audience in a cinema hall, not when you hysterically cry like we normally do in our films. I don't believe in that kind of acting. Best of luck to everyone who follows that form of acting. But I don't like that. You have always been in Mohit Suri's movies, except for Woh Lamhe. Whenever he pitches a script to me, I like it. I like the ideas and characters he puts forth and the world he explores in his films. After working with him in three films, you are comfortable with what he wants you to do. I know what kind of shots Mohit wants me to give. He doesn't have to tell me when I go wrong. I know what he wants, I know when he wants a scene to be re-shot. We discuss a lot since we know each other so well. That helps. Our rapport on and off screen is great. How open is he to your inputs? If I feel a certain way about a character, I voice it out. It is his prerogative to take it or not. If he feels it will help, he will take it. Otherwise, he will not. It's okay with me if he doesn't take my inputs, as long as he can convince me. If I am not convinced, we discuss it some more. In the end, it is all about who is convinced the best. This is your second film with Kangana after Gangster. How was the experience of working with her? She is a fine actress. She has done a good job in this film too. She is spontaneous and we have always had a good chemistry on and off screen. Like Gangster, you will see a different kind of chemistry between us here. It is not the typical boy-meets-girl story. With this dark supernatural world in the background, it will be nice to see how these two people evolve. Does the film showcase more of the Adhyayan-Kangana chemistry or the Emraan-Kangana chemistry? I will not reveal what kind of relationship we share, whether there is romance or not. How was it working with Adhyayan? I have exactly two scenes with him. But I have seen him perform even I was not on the sets and he is very honest performer. He has a very difficult role, and has put in a very intense performance. You have to live up to the expectations of the original Raaz, which was a big hit. Does that put pressure? No. We should detach ourselves from the original or else you will end up copying something from that. The content is completely different. What kind of research did you do to bring a touch of reality to your character? I learnt some painting but couldn't pursue that for long, as we were bound by time. I just learnt how to hold the brush and draw some strokes on the canvas. The paintings were done by a professional. I also read a lot of books and watched movies to get into the character. What are your favourite horror films? The Shining, Exorcist, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and the French film The Orphanage. You have always been a part of the Bhatt camp. How was the experience of working with them? They exploit me for being family! But they also know how to get the best out of me. It is nice to have people whom you know. They know how to pull the strings and get it out of you. We share the same sensibilities as far as films go. But why not work under other banners? Nothing excited me. The kinds of films I want to do are different from the films you see in Bollywood. I really can't stand that. There were rumours that Kangana and Mohit had a tiff. Did that affect the working atmosphere on the sets? Mohit is always tensed. Even if he hasn't had a fight with anyone, he is tensed. So obviously if you fight with someone, it gets worse. But it never affects the work. Have you ever wondered why -- in spite of giving so many hits -- you do not fall under the A-listers bracket in Bollywood? I don't want to be. I don't understand the lists people make. I am arrogant enough to think that I am the best. I don't need another person's approval to tell me if I am good or not. I don't need an award ceremony to tell me that. Most of the award ceremonies are like a re-run of the past year. I wouldn't want to go for an award ceremony like that. If they give me an award, it's fine. But I will not go there and clap for someone whom I think doesn't deserve it. When my films start failing, and the audiences don't accept it, then I should worry. I don't really care much for the critics. People think that a big budget film is a big break for an actor. But I think it is all about big ideas. There have been some miserable big budget films that have been bad on content. I don't want to do films like that. As far as I get a good script, I am happy. Does being called a serial kisser upset you? No. Since I have been kissing in all my films, they call me that. It would upset me if I wasn't kissing and they called me one! Do you think people have started expecting you to kiss in films even if you didn't want to? Yes, I think they have. When you want to move on and change your image, you start doing diverse roles. I think it will take me some time to shift from that. That will happen with time. How many kisses can we expect in Raaz? You will find place for a kiss or two! What next? There is Tum Mile, based on the Mumbai floods. Then there is Raftaar, a film based on the media.

Is it true that you have become a 'dietician' to Kajol and Kareena? Oh my God! I expected you to start with DOSTANA and you shot the other way...(laughs). It's all right. See, I have not become a 'dietician' to Kajol and Kareena in a true sense, but I have given them some suggestions to abide by if they are interested in working in my next films. I have asked Kajol to lose some flab for MY NAME IS KHAN. And I told Kareena not to lose weight for an unnamed Dharma Productions film to be directed by a friend Rensil D'Silva. I understand Kajol's weight loss, but Kareena's size zero is quite 'in' now... That's a myth and may be a momentary craze. But the truth is Indian audience always prefers a healthy (not fat) heroine...this size zero concept is not for Hindi film heroines, at least that's what I feel. You will be directing again after quite some time. Tell us more about MY NAME IS KHAN? MY NAME IS KHAN is a film based on the psyche of a Muslim man whose name comes up in the suspect list of terrorists post 9/11. Yes, as usual, this film has Shah Rukh as the hero and Kajol as the heroine. And I will be directing a film after quite some time. The trio will be back to sizzle the screen after KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM. So you may as well call it my comeback as a director. We heard it took you long to persuade Kajol to sign the film. True? Kajol is always like that...she knows she can never say 'No' to me...still she tries in vain. But the point is, I am very happy that she has finally agreed to do the film because only she can play her character in the film. Why is Shah Rukh an indispensable part of almost every Dharma Productions film? Is it because he sells? Shah Rukh is definitely one of the biggest stars in Bollywood and his screen presence does make a difference. But the reason why he is in almost all our films is something different. My father (Yash Johar) was very fond of Shah Rukh, in fact he considered him to be family, which of course, SRK is. And when I decided to make films, he said: 'Beta, if possible, try to involve Shah Rukh in all Dharma Productions projects.' Besides, Shah Rukh has been a friend, philosopher and guide...it's an old association and old habits die hard. And, what about actors like Rani Mukherjee, Priety Zinta and Kajol who do cameo in all your films, if not playing the lead in them? My weakness and strength are my friends and I can't do without them. But it's not possible to involve all of them in every film. So I try to make sure that they play at least a small, if not a full-fledged role in my films. Of late you have become costume designer for Shah Rukh in most of his films including OM SHANTI OM. Is it your new avtaar? Arre, nehi yaar. I won't like to style anyone except Shah Rukh and I am sure he won't hire me, especially in times of recession. Jokes apart, I enjoy shopping...be it for Farah's (Khan) triplets or Farah herself or Shah Rukh. Whenever I come across something classy, it's SRK who flashes in my mind and I start thinking for which film or scene this dress will suit him. You have already put your fingers in many pies. How do you manage that? I don't think I am no longer a trendsetter, especially with Farhan (Akhtar) around. (Laughs aloud) I always did what I wanted to do at a given point of time or what a particular time wanted me to do. But of course, the producer-director part is family business and passion. Besides, that I enjoy chatting with friends for hours and that led to the chat-show. All my friends are from the film fraternity, so hosting awards functions are like interacting and leg-pulling friends. Just now you mentioned Farhan Akhtar. So any plans to play a rockstar on screen? You will run for your life if I open my mouth to sing.

mar_melad_ka: "Raavana" Interview : Abhishek-Aishwariya click here Bachchan Jr and his 'bahu' Aishwarya have turned mythological these days, thanks to Mani Ratnam's RAVAANA where they play the title role and Sita respectively. The film is now being shot in Kolkata. Our correspondent gets into a light-heated tete-a-tete with the duo on 'intense' factors of life. Why is that no unit member ready to tell what RAVAANA is going to be like? Abhishek: Because, he (Ravaana) is not a cool guy to mess up with (bursts into laughter). Aishwarya: I will answer that...it's because of a few reasons. The film is director Mani Ratnam's dream project and a tough one too. It's not a modern-day Ramayana, but Mani's own interpretation of the epic set in today's time. So, all cast and crew need to focus intensely on their roles to understand the character and interpret it on-screen. There must not be any interferences or diversions. Besides, it's not the right time to promote the film...we are still shooting for it. If we talk to media about it now, there are ample chances that journos will misinterpret the entire thing and hence it will send wrong vibes to the audience. And an additional reason for me not talking to press is because of my tight schedule. If you ever work for Mani in future, you will understand he keeps his shooting schedules so tight-knit that you can hardly get a time to relax on the sets. Even, our sleep is time-bound while shooting. Then, I am playing 'Sita' in both Tamil and Hindi versions, while other actors will differ in the two versions. So, I am undergoing double pressure and after long hours of 'lights, camera, sound, action', I feel totally drained out. But, despite your tight schedule, you made it to DELHI 6 premiere and Filmfare Awards ? Aishwarya: That's what love makes you do dear. I wanted to be with Abhishek my best pal and hubby-to encourage him on the release of his new film. And, Filmfare Awards is the Oscar of Bollywood. So, really couldn't afford to miss on that. So Aishwarya is playing 'Sita' and Abhishek 'Ravaana' ? Aishwarya: My name in the film is not 'Sita' (at least, as of now). But the character I play have traits of Sita. Abhishek: Yes, I am playing 'Ravaana'. In Ramayana, Sita is faithful only to Ram. But here at the shoots, we are seeing a Sita dancing with Ravaana? Abhishek: Actually, I bribed the scriptwriter so that I am allowed to romance my wife on-screen, no matter what roles we play. Aishwarya: On a more serious note, I told you it's a Mani Ratnam film and to know the truth audience have to wait for the release of the film. This is your sixth film together. Any complaints against each other as co-actors? Abhishek: Sachch bolke biwi haathon pithna nehi hai! (laughs aloud) No...honestly...no complaints. Ash is the best co-actor one can ever get. She is one of the biggest stars of Bollywood and a name in Hollywood, still she is so down-to-earth. She makes her co-actor comfortable from Scene 1, irrespective of the fact whether he is a star or a newcomer. Aishwarya: Abhishek and I have never been paired the conventional way-as in, man-wife, on-screen. Starting from DHAI AKSHAR PREM KE , where we were pretending as husband-wife, to KUCHH NA KAHO, where I am someone else's wife and still fall in love with him, or UMRAO JAAN , where it's a failed love story, and SARKAR RAJ, where he is a married man, we hardly got to be romantic on screen. Even in GURU, it's all about the protagonist's life story. I really wished someone to cast us as romantic pair, hopefully that's going to happen in Rajeev Menon's DHUN. We heard that DHUN is a remake of Amitabh-Jaya starrer ABHIMAAN? Abhishek: The script is somewhat similar, but it's not a remake. How can one even think of remaking a masterpiece like ABHIMAAN! It's a musical love story. Abhimaan is often said to be based on real life story of Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan... Abhishek: It's surprising that the media know more about my parents than I do. Aishwarya: I don't think it's good to mix reel and real life. My question is, how much chances are there for a ABHIMAAN-like situation in your life? Abhi-Ash: Zero percent. Abhishek: Let me clarify, we are all grown-ups and hardcore professionals. Be it pa or ma, or me or Ash, we have learnt to keep our work outside before getting inside our home. There is no competition and can't be. We are all different individuals with our respective style of work. Aishwarya: We are all very secure about our professional as well as personal life. Aren't you a little upset not getting a Padma Shri like Ash? Abhishek: Not at all. I don't think I have done anything to deserve that honour so far. On second thoughts, I have got a Padma Shri -whatever belongs to me is Ash's and vice-versa. So her award is mine as well. So you are happy for her? Abhishek: Wish could explain my happiness for her. I am so proud that my girl has got the honour she deserves for years. Aishwarya: Abhishek is my source of inspiration. He is always so supportive. Whenever I am confused and don't know what to do, I look at him and he solves the duality in me like magic. He is the real 'Padma Shri' and I'm his 'Padma Shrimati' (giggles). You are going to complete two years of marriage. Any special plans for your anniversary? Abhishek: That's for us to do and us to know. Aishwarya: I am sure loads of pleasant surprises are awaiting me. Abhishek: And for me too.

Leader успешно пересек 100-дневную планку в прокате. Каково это ощущение? - О, конечно же, это здорово, когда первый фильм становится успешным. У меня был необычный дебют. Никаких привычных песен-танцев-драк. Тот факт, что такой фильм как Leader сделал кассовые сборы и стал коммерчески успешным, придает мне решимости. Он открыл для меня новые возможности, благодаря чему мне теперь легче планировать свою будущую карьеру. - Так что же заставило тебя сняться в Leader? - Я хотел поучаствовать в создании нового кино. К тому времени я уже занимался разработкой визуальных эффектов и кинопроизводством, поэтому представлял себе, в каком именно фильме хотел бы сняться. К тому же, я убежден в том, что точно так же, как в мире нет двух абсолютно одинаковых людей, фильмы, в которых они снимаются, тоже не должны быть похожи друг на друга. - Значит, ты пошел на этот риск, и он оправдался. А если бы нет – тогда что? - Ой, ну тут все ясно. Я бы просто вернулся к продюсированию. - По фильму ты играешь высокоморального Главного Министра, который стремится в одиночку истребить коррупцию. Как по-твоему, в реальной жизни такое возможно? - Видите ли, Leader – это то, каким в идеале мы хотим видеть штат Андхра Прадеш и нашего Главного Министра. Это нечто вроде выражения желания простого гражданина. Подобные фильмы уже выпускались на экран, и в прошлом у нас были очень сильные лидеры, такие как Махатма Ганди или Сардар Валлабхай Патель, к примеру. И сегодня нам все еще необходимы подобные лидеры – именно поэтому и родилась концепция фильма Leader, ведь кино – это один из способов донести свою точку зрения до людей. - Ты хочешь, чтобы твое имя было связано с политикой? - Кино я понимаю, а политику – все еще нет. Повлияло ли это на твое решение стать актером? - Разумеется, я в чуть более выгодном положении, благодаря своему происхождению и семье. Так что, во многом это и вправду оказало влияние. Это словно учиться в киношколе прямо с первого класса. Я знаю, как делается кино вплоть до мелочей. - Расскажи что-нибудь о своем фильме 2006 года A Belly Full Of Dreams, который получил Национальную Премию, как Лучший Фильм. - В то время я уже 7 лет как руководил компанией, разрабатывающей визуальные эффекты, Spirit Media. Я хотел работать над чем-нибудь интересным. Именно тогда мой сосед Пракаш, сын сэра Рагхавендры Рао, пересказал мне идею писателя Дж. К. Барави, которую он переписал и адаптировал. Но это все кино – и это здорово. - Все остальные молодые актеры в киноиндустрии – твои друзья и в то же время соперники. Для тебя это трудная ситуация? - Я считаю, что кино, как искусство, не должно быть основано на соперничестве. Актеры, о которых вы говорите, были моими приятелями с самого детства. Но мы ведь не похожи друг на друга внешне, и наш образ мыслей тоже отличается, так что каждый делает то, что ему более по душе. Зачастую мы вчетвером – Банни, Чаран, Чайтанья и я – сидим вместе, отсматриваем черновые варианты наших фильмов и обсуждаем, что из этого может сработать, а что нет. Так что ни о каком чувстве соперничества и речи быть не может. - Из тех фильмов, которые они сделали, есть ли какой-нибудь, в котором тебе до смерти хотелось бы сыграть? - Думаю, каждый актер предназначен для определенного фильма, так что мне вполне хватает своих собственных. - Кто твоя любимая современная актриса? - На мой взгляд, Асин и Триша – две очень талантливые девушки. (смеется) - А как насчет режиссуры? - Мне бы хотелось заняться ею в ближайшем будущем. Это не такая уж и далекая мечта. Я периодически работаю над сценарием, так что полнометражный фильм определенно в моих планах. - Какие жанры ты предпочитаешь? - Мне нравятся все жанры, но особенно по душе фильмы, расчитанные на женскую аудиторию. Единственный жанр, который я не выношу, это ужасы. Я просто не понимаю самой цели создания фильмов ужасов. За всю свою жизнь я не видел ни одного фильма ужасов. - Ты стал кумиром Толливуда. Затрудняет ли вся эта слава твою личную жизнь? - Нисколько. Моя семья всегда была довольно известна в Хайдерабаде. Так что, никакой внезапной перемены я не чувствую. Я по-прежнему хожу в те же рестораны, общаюсь с тем же кругом друзей и все такое. Я по-прежнему езжу в Старый Город. Я обожаю халим (традиционное мусульманское блюдо). И я по-прежнему часто завтракаю в Often. На самом деле, я даже рад, когда люди меня узнают, ведь это означает, что они смотрели мой фильм. Так что, это все к лучшему. - Какой самый лучший комплимент из всех, которые ты когда-либо получал? - Приятно слышать мнение людей о себе и своей работе. Leader был не только нестандартным дебютом, но и несущим ответственнность. Так что, он в некотором роде заставил людей уважать мою работу. Но да, самым приятным был момент, когда один человек подошел ко мне и сказал, что Leader был первым фильмом за десять лет, который он посмотрел до конца. Мне было действительно очень приятно. - Твоя самая чокнутая фанатка? - Ммм, да, были случаи неадекватных фанаток во время некоторых шоу. И я не смог с ними справится!
