"She is a true style diva when it comes depicting the Indian look. She looks fabulous in the traditional Indian saris. I would say that she brings out the best of Indian outfits. She carries them very well. But I wouldn't like to see her in a western outfit," Shantanu of designer duo Shantanu and Nikhil told IANS. The actress, who is synonymous with style and beauty for her fans, surprised many when she bagged the MTV Lycra Maha Style Icon Award in 2004. In 2006, British magazine Eastern Eye listed her as one of "Asia's Sexiest Women" in their September issue. A rare blend of beauty and talent, Rekha also hogs the limelight for her timeless beauty and mysterious lifestyle. She is quite secretive about her personal life, lives alone with her secretary Farzana and doesn't socialise much except to attend award functions. She manages the media's prying eye tactfully and always keeps her cool. "I'm a very shy person. Unlike what has been insinuated, it's not a strategy to retain my aura. I'm not trying to live up to any mystery woman image. "People might think that I am not married and have no children, the conventional lifestyle you know, but I see it this way - as long as you are alive, you have a chance to have a future. At least there is hope," she was quoted as saying. As an actress she evolved with each role she played. Be it a courtesan in Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan or a housewife in Ijazzat or a fun-loving girl in Khubsoorat, she has always proved her mettle. After watching Umrao Jaan, nobody could believe that she could barely speak Hindi when she came to Bollywood as her enunciation of Urdu in the period film was flawless. She won the National Award for it. "As a performer, she is inspiring. It's not only Umrao Jaan but her entire career and characters that she essayed through her performances that are extremely inspiring," Aishwarya Rai said in an interview. Rekha gave memorable performances in Ghar, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Khubsoorat, Silsila, Vijeta, Utsav, Khoon Bhari Maang, Zubeida, Bhoot and Krrish. But she disappointed her fans and critics in Mira Nair's controversial Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love in 1996 and as a wife who turns to prostitution in Aastha: In the Prison of Spring the following year. Many felt it was the end of her career. But Rekha remained unperturbed by the criticism. She said: "After Aastha: In the Prison of Spring people had a lot to say about my role of a wife who moonlights as a prostitute. I don't have problems playing anything. I've reached a stage where I could do justice to any role that came my way. It could the role of a mother, a sister-in-law, negative, positive, sensational or anything." Born Bhanurekha Ganesan to well-known Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli, Rekha's personal life has been quite tumultuous. She was born out of wedlock and was disowned by her father. Her mother later forced her to work in films. She made her first appearance as a child actor in 1966 in a Telugu film Rangula Ratnam. Three years later she made her debut as heroine in hit Kannada film "Goadalli CID 999" with Rajkumar. In 1970 she forayed into Hindi films with Sawan Bhadon, paired opposite Navin Nishchol. The movie was a huge hit and Rekha became a star overnight. Despite being overweight, she got many offers and gave hits like Kahani Kismat Ki and Raampur Ka Lakshman and there was no looking back. In her heyday she scorched headlines for her link ups with co-actors like Jeetendra, Vinod Mehra, Kiran Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. She praised his performance in "Last Lear" as "very Shakespearean". He`s my guru. I learnt so much from him," Rekha said. Commenting on Amitabh`s role in "Last Lear", she said, "seriously I think Rituparno Ghosh is like Utpal Dutt. And I believe Bachchan is very Shakespearean in `Last Lear`. Together I believe the two have paid a very proper tribute to Shakespeare. I`m looking forward to it. "I seriously think Bachchan is more Bengali than any one I know. He`s a true Bengali dada. And I`m not saying that because he has a Bengali wife or has spent time in Kolkata. There`s more of Rabindranath Tagore`s legacy in him than anyone else." Is she aware that Preity Zinta in Rituparno Ghosh`s "Last Lear" has been styled, a la Rekha in "Silsila"? "Has she? Is it an imitation or a tribute? We`ve to make that distinction very clearly," said Rekha, who turned 53 Oct 10. Asked about her birthday celebrations, she said: "I didn`t notice. For me every day is a celebration, every moment a blessing from god. I don`t need to visit temples on my birthday. There`s a temple right here in my house and that`s where prayed, as I do every day." How does she manage to remain so positive in spite of so much negativity around her? "I don`t think about negative things. There`s so much beauty, love and excitement to be savoured every day. People can get to us only if we allow them to. Besides, I don`t believe people are negative without reason. Even the cobra that bites you has a reason to do so. "At Dev Saab`s book release, I had to rush in and rush out because my pup Shiva was waiting in the car. I`ve five pups and all very dear to me. They`re my children. I left Shiva in the car. Yes, I did trip but I went right into the car! So it was a perfect trip. "People ask me about the way I conduct my life. Sorry, beautiful music is conducted... Lives cannot be conducted. At least I`ve always gone with the flow, risen and fallen with the rhythms of existence without, tripping over seriously. "My current high is bonding with Shah Rukh Khan. Of course, I`ve known him for years. But lately we`re connecting more profoundly. I`ve done a blink-and-miss appearance in `Om Shanti Om` and that`s when I got to know him seriously. He has a sharp mind." Rekha then spoke about Tagore. "Do you know Tagore was a true woman`s libber? He started (the university in) Santiniketan for women long before feminism was conceptualised. I like the thought of women being given philosophical and emotional sanctuary by a man who isn`t threatened by them. "Today, I find we`re too obsessed by superficialities and surface gratification. On the news channels all we hear about achievers is their financial assets, homes, villas and parties. There has to be a spirit that supports dreams. I dream all the time. My life is a dream and I dream a new dream every day." Is Rekha going to the West? "No, where did you hear that? I`ve no such plans. I`ve never planned anything in life, certainly not my career. Mira Nair`s `Kamasutra` happened to me by chance. Maybe something will come up. At the moment I`m excited about the debut of my nephew which will happen next year." Remita: Raj Kanwar plans to bring Rekha, Shabana together Mumbai, October 23, 2007 Outwardly there's no love lost between the two. Many years ago, Shabana Azmi had been openly critical of Rekha's dialogues and performances. But now, 30 years after they played friends fighting over Jeetendra in Raaste Pyar Ke, they may work together in Raj Kanwar's Sadiyaan. Reluctant to reveal too many details at the moment, Kanwar told IANS: "The film would be an entirely new territory for me. Yes, I do want to cast Rekha and Shabanaji together. Work is on for the screenplay. Song recordings have also started. I hope to get the project in place in a few weeks." More recently Shabana's husband Javed Akhtar had opined that he didn't think too highly of Rekha either. "I've never been a fan of Rekha. Her performances failed to touch me. The first time I really liked her was in Krrish," he said. However, Rekha is deeply excited by the film. She said: "Shabana, whom I call Munni, is always a pleasure to work with. The aura around her is intriguing. For the first time, Rekha, India's Greta Garbo, breaks her silence on her private life. Featuring on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal on Star World to be aired this Sunday, Rekha speaks about her relationship with her parents, her marriage, stardom and the influence of superstar Amitabh Bachchan in her life. In an exclusive sneak peek into the interview, Simi Garewal tells Timesofindia.com what it was like talking to Rekha about facts which she has never spoken before. "It was a 20-year-long wait. Rekha had given her first TV interview 20 years ago on my programme, It's a Woman's World . She doesn't talk about her private life, but I persisted and she agreed. We started off a bit tense but she opened up. I feel this is one of her most candid conversations on personal topics," sighs Simi. In the interview, Simi rekindles the original Bhanurekha in her, to which Rekha says, "I am and I will always be Bhanurekha." Rekha reveals a difficult childhood where she grew up without her father (Gemini Ganeshan) around, the “three ammas”, her complexes about her looks as a child, how she was ' kali ' (dark) and her sister ' gori ' (fair). Rekha recounts how she dropped out of school at the age of 13 to "forcibly" join films and financially support her family. "Bhanurekha never wanted to be an actress. She had different dreams and desires. At that point, all I wanted was to be married and to be loved and to spend my life with somebody who cared for me and have lots and lots of children," says Rekha. "I wonder why I felt like that then, but that's what Bhanurekha wanted. That was her dream," she adds. Rekha admits that she didn't "know what a father meant" and "grew up without a male influence in my life". She also tells Simi that she had 'three mothers”, and her own mother was so "dizzy and drunk with love for my father that she never mentioned the pain she went through". So did Simi get the answers she was looking for? "One never gets the answers one wants but Rekha was very forthcoming and honest within the framework of her life." The episodes also feature Rekha giving her take on womanhood. "When does one register that one is a woman? Does she become a woman when she becomes responsible? Does she become a woman when she falls in love? Does a girl become a woman when she goes through pain, when it is difficult for her?" She reminisces how the high of being a superstar hit her really late. "Not until Khoon Bhari Maang . I didn't realise the value of being an actor. But when I went up on the stage, and received my award ... Boom, it hit me." Asked if she is a recluse, Rekha says, "No. Who said I was alone? I didn't plan it this way. It just happened to me. I didn't plan to go and live in that house alone. It so happened, ittefaaq se ." The diva denies her marriage to filmstar Vinod Mehra. "He was just a well-wisher and very close to me." And on marriage to Mukesh Agarwal, she confesses, "In a way it was an arranged match - it wasn't love, that's for sure. Before anything registered, it was all over. But then sometimes that one small thing can have a profound effect in your life ... That did." Agarwal’s suicide had a major impact on her, Rekha says. "That was the time I really really grew up. I became the woman of the world. I got a crash course of what people are all about." On her relationships, Rekha has been candid. "It was never a spur-of-the-moment fun. It was always genuine, from my side at least. I didn't get into a relationship in search of anything in particular. I didn't have an idea what to look for," she says. "I didn't know what a man is all about. What he is supposed to mean to a woman? Is he a provider? Is he supposed to be a lover? Yes, I knew that part. I know that by heart. I knew that my man had to be a lover. He had to love me to death. Because I didn't know any better." And on the million-dollar question on Amitabh Bachchan? Rekha confesses that he was the man who actually influenced her life for a long time, about whom she has spoken at length to Simi. She still seems to hold on to him “somewhere in her life”.
