Soniya: интервью из сегодняшнего Times of India His Bollywood debut film "Raavan" came up short at the box office, but Tamil superstar Chiyaan Vikram insists he personally received rave reviews about his performance. The actor admittedly took a grave risk by playing the second lead in his first Hindi movie because few southern filmstars ever manage to get a real ‘break’ in Bollywood. But Vikram has never been shy of taking risks, dropping out of an MBA programme and eventually quitting his copywriting in order to take a chance on acting. He is philosophical about deferred success, having managed his first big break down south after a decade of largely unsuccessful movies. He has just signed up for a bilingual UTV film. Vikram talks star rivalry, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and experimental cinema with Bharati Dubey. Excerpts: Superstars down south have always been synonymous with mythologicals — from M G Ramachandran and N T Rama Rao, to Sivaji Ganesan and Rajinikanth, who played Karna in "Dalapathy". Now you've played Raavan. Is it all of a piece? Mythology works with southern audiences, even today. In places like Andhra Pradesh, a lot of Telugu heroes have used mythology to good effect in politics too. I am told that NTR campaigned as Ram and won the election. Chennai, sadly, is not so much into mythology. Down south, temples are dedicated to regional superstars. Is this an extension of a very particular truth — that audiences there are used to treating their movie idols as gods? It’s one of those rarities that sadly ceased to exist by the time I became a star! (winks) It’s always been easier for a Sridevi or an Asin to make it big in Bollywood rather than a male actor from the south. Most South Indian actors, even the leading ones, have found it hard to establish themselves in Hindi cinema. Why? South Indian heroes have not felt the need to leave their fiefdoms and have a shot at stardom in Bollywood. It’s like asking a Bollywood superstar why he doesn’t have a chance in Hollywood. Why should he even try? He may want to do a film or two, but would not want to leave his superstardom behind to seek uncertain glory. There's always been considerable reluctance to cast a South Indian actor as the lead hero in a Hindi film. What do you have to say about that? I'm sure if one is talented and leaves his roots behind, he can work his way up in Bollywood. There’s a lot of healthy rivalry between heroes in the north. How does it work down south? For one, we hardly have ensemble casts down south, where people have an opportunity to team up and work together. In the south, rivalries are not between stars but between their fans. When two superstars’ films release on the same day, it usually results in a fight over posters and hoardings. But unlike Bollywood, we meet and interact with our fans very regularly. Who is the best dancer in Bollywood after Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit? Ash, of course! You are producing a film but not acting in it. Why? In the south, there is an image we have to maintain. We cannot be part of films that are not very conventional. This film is about vendetta and the end is not what my fans would want to see — they always want their hero to come out triumphant. Anything that is experimental is high risk in the south. But there’s a slow transition happening and we are trying to find a balance between those who want to see out-of-the-box cinema and hardcore commercial buffs. What kind of feedback did you get from the Hindi film industry after "Raavan"? Do you see yourself doing more Hindi films? It’s been awesome! I got rave reviews from a lot of unexpected quarters. People found my character Dev intriguing and exciting. I have always loved doing challenging roles and "Raavan" has opened new vistas for me. Something tells me a lot of interesting offers are going to come from other regional languages too. This experience gave me a chance to showcase myself as a performer in "Ravanan" (the Tamil version) and as a star in "Raavan". Audiences in north India did not seem to like "Raavan" but the film’s Tamil version did very well. Do you think people up north did not want to see a Ram with shades of grey about him? Were they repulsed at the prospect of Sita falling for Raavan? Trust me, if I knew the answer to that, I would have discussed it with Mr Mani Ratnam while we were making the film.

This multi-talented actor has given his nod to act in a Malayalam movie. This movie is to be directed by Roshan Andrews, whose recent film with Mohanlal Evidam Swargamanu was a big hit. Roshan is known for his stylish way of film-making using latest technologies. Now the best part about this announcement is that Vikram has agreed to act for free in this movie. It is being reported that Vikram was very impressed with the script narrated by Roshan and agreed to do it immediately. "My fans in Kerala have been waiting for a long time for me to act in Malayalam films. This is my gift to them" Vikram was quoted as saying. The movie is expected to go on floors after Vikram completes his current projects in Tamil.

There is a lot happening on the side of Cheeyan Vikram. Really a lot so to say. Vikram was expected to do director Boopathy Pandian film after ‘Kanthaswamy’. But Cheeyan opted to do Mani Ratnam's trilingual ‘Raavanan’ and worked hard for almost 2 years. But when the film got released it did not live up to the hype and expectations. But the performance of Vikram in Hindi and Tamil were much appreciated and Vikram added more celebrities to his fan base. One of them was the Bollywood director Neeraj Pandey who did the classy film 'A Wednesday' which was later remade in Tamil as ‘Unnaipol Oruvan’ with Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal. Recently Neeraj was in Chennai and had met Vikram. After a small talk the Bollywood director expressed his interest in Vikram and told the star that soon they will be doing a Hindi film together. After ‘Raavanan’, Vikram got involved in a Selvaraghavan film and even completed a schedule of shooting for seven days. But production hitch ups like the complete script wasn’t ready and the new heroine wasn’t up to the mark etc. shelved the project. He then started a film called '24' to be directed by Vikram Kumar of ‘Yavarum Nalam’ fame. Even this film got into trouble and Vikram walked out of the project after shooting for four days. If all that weren’t enough now we hear that Vikaram has deferred the Boopathy Pandian film 'Vedi' for which he was to start shooting in Salem on August 17. Sources close to Vikram say ‘Vedi’ is a comedy and Vikram feels that this may not be the right time to do a comedy. The Veera of ‘Raavanan’ has gone down well with the masses and so he wants to do another serious character before taking up a comedy. In the process Vikram has heard and liked a story narrated by ‘Madrasapattinam’ Vijay and it is all likely Vikram will start this film soon as his next. After completing Vijay's film Vikram will bag the comedy bus to be driven by Boopathy Pandian. Vikram hasn't done a full fledged comedy yet. So we expect his film with Boopathy Pandian to be a great entertainer.

Сначала ему кажется, что это будет новое слово в кинематографе (прям вот как он у тебя в клипе Мурзику говорил, когда тот его отчитывал), и стоит рискнуть, а по пути понимает, что дело пахнет керосином, и теряет к ним интерес... Хочется ему чего-то такого... эдакого! Феерического! Фантастического!!! А ничего такого не подворачивается... У Ведмедика явно творческий кризис, блин Нет у него, видать, под боком опытного советчика, который бы ему объяснил, что шедевралку снимать нужно, но между делом, а главное - выпускать для своих поклонников один-два крепких мейнстримовых фильма в год, чтобы тебя не забывали.
