tais: Sharad Kapoor: Success is a big high! By Jasmeen Dugal, Bollywood Trade News Network Unlike his onscreen image, Sharad Kapoor is charming and expressive, content with the way his career is shaping up; "I am aware of how rare it is for people to be able to do precisely what they want to do, so I am always grateful to God". Despite more than his fair share of setbacks, Sharad has carved a niche for himself in Bollywood. "I have always wanted to act in films for as long as I can remember. It wasn't for the glamour that is synonymous with Bollywood. Since childhood, I had rich friends. They drove around in foreign cars, worked out at health clubs, and went clubbing every weekend - I was always the hanger-on. Subconsciously, I have always aspired to be like them one day... I too wanted money and all the trappings that come it," reveals the actor. "My friends always told me that I had the height and the looks to make it in films. So one day I just shifted bag and baggage to Mumbai. I thought it was going to be easy - and I was wrong as hell! I don't know what it was like for everybody else, but for me it was a very painful process. 'Struggle' is the word I had to confront each morning. I didn't have to struggle physically but mentally there was a lot of strain on me. I was in a new city; my parents and friends were not there to support me. I had to go out alone - and struggle. It is not easy setting out each morning to meet filmmakers and coordinators - only to face rejection. I've shed a lot of tears. Each time I was rejected, I felt like a cast off; but I did not lose hope." "I started my career as the assistant director of LAKSHMAN REKHA and ANGAAR. Mahesh Bhatt saw me one day and called me over. He said I was perfect for a role in his forthcoming film (DASTAK) co-starring the then-reigning Miss Universe Sushmita Sen! What more could I ask for? It is all destinies. I spent so many years going door-to-door to meet filmmakers and here, such a prestigious film literally fell in my lap!" Post-DASTAK, he began making up for lost time, as films came in droves. JOSH co-starring Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai was his first box-office success and since then there is no looking back. Is it easy to get swayed by sudden success, I ask him? "Yes it is, and God knows I could have easily disappeared into the vicious circle of drink, women and adulation. Success is a big high. It can delude you into feeling it will always be your bedfellow but suddenly you wake up and the years have gone by. I was determined that I would not allow success to sway me. God knows I have worked hard for it."

tais: Сайтик к фильму Lal Salaam

wichy: Вот, кстати, если бы Ашка в Josh влюблялась не в Чандрачура, а в Шарада - я бы, может, этот фильм и досмотрела

tais: Sharad Kapoor's best is yet to come 07th Jan 2001 18.09 IST By N K Deoshi Sharad Kapoor, the dopey-eyed actor, finally seems to have clinched his dream role. Following some commendable performances in "Josh" and "Aghaaz", the actor is all set to make an emphatic comeback in "Lal Salaam", a film that takes a candid look at the Naxalite movement in the country. No, unlike his previous roles, he is not playing a psychotic lover or a street side gunda this time. In the film, Sharad plays the rural doctor Khanna Madavi, a humble and meek creature, while Nandita plays his fiancйe who's forced by circumstances to become a Naxalite. The film, directed by Gagan Vihari, is based on a true story and Sharad's role in the film is culled from real life. By way of homework Sharad met the doctor whose character he enacts in the film, and studied his behavioral idiosyncrasies to catch up with his mannerisms. Besides, the film's director spent six arduous years researching his subject. Sharad accepts that his role in the film "was a challenge" and gave him the chance to explore his potentialities as an actor. Bogged in the thick of his ham-routine as he has been in his career, this is the first time he has got a chance to study a character and delineate its growth as the film progresses. It sure is a first sign that the young actor is willing to see beyond the tinsel kitsch, its typical run-around-the-trees grind and try something different and meaningful. He may have given some good or some bad performances but dig it-- his best is yet to come.

tais: Sharad Kapoor to play Baba Amte 01st Feb 2002 11.35 IST By ApunKaChoice Bureau Actor Sharad Kapoor is all set to portray well-known social activist, Baba Amte, who is acclaimed for his work to better the lot of lepers, in the film Lal Salaam. In the film, he is cast opposite talented Nandita Das and hopes that this film will give his career the much-required boost. The film starts off as a love story and then slips into a more serious mode. While Gagan Vihari will direct the film, Hridaynath Mangeshkar will compose its music. The icing on the cake is a few soulful numbers rendered by ‘badi didi’ Lata Mangeshkar for the film.

nelke: Sharad Kapoor - A Hero for Hope Did you face problems when you first arrived in the industry, a newcomer without any “godfather”? My career began with Mahesh Bhatt’s Dastak. And within a short span of time, my life took a U turn for the better. Within a few months of my arrival in the industry, I had signed over two dozen films and it all seemed like a dream. I grabbed every film that came my way because I had nobody in this line to guide me. With my lack of experience, most of the films turned out to be bad and flopped at the box-office. I was stuck acting in a couple of sub-standard films that I had signed, without big banners to back them. By the time I realized that things were going wrong, my films released and flopped miserably. I was lucky that I had a few good projects like Khauff and Josh or else my career would have been completely wiped out. Josh was like a second lease of life for my career. After the film hit the jackpot, Iґve got a lot of positive response from the film industry and this time around I’m choosy about the films I sign. Tell us about Lal Salaam? Lal Salaam is based on the life of Prakash Amte (my character), who is the son of a social reformer, Baba Amte. Prakash has worked with Adivasis and I was initially approached to play an Adivasi. But, Nandita Das who also stars in the film refused to do it, if I were to play the Adivasi. She insisted that I did not look like an Adivasi from any angle. I even called her up to convince her that Iґd do my best to look like the tribal. But, she refused and asked me to play Prakash. So, the director met up with Prakash Amte (a real life character!) and gave me the details on his character, mannerisms, the way he speaks, walks and carries himself. But, I havenґt been able to meet him yet even though I’m portraying his character, because Iґve been shooting outdoors all this while. We hear you do a lot for the poor, and towards charity. What is your latest project? I have been associated with Sunil Shettyґs Heroes For Hope. So how come youґre getting into the restaurant business? Well, Iґm just following the path led by my brother Tillu who is a partner in Tangerine, a new restaurant in Kolkata. Based on his enthusiasm and success, Iґm currently working out plans to start my own restaurant called The Destination in suburban Mumbai.

nelke: ‘I was alone in Mumbai ... But God is great: He gave me food and He gave me friends, who were my pillar of strength,’ says Sharad Kapoor I am a firm believer in the existence of God. He looks after me and whatever I have achieved in life is through His grace. When I shifted to Mumbai to pursue a career in films, I didn't struggle physically but mentally I went through hell. All the little glitches added up. Back home I was a pampered kid but in Mumbai, my parents were not around when I woke up; I had to make tea and toast myself, lock the house, and go out alone in search for work. There was no one to comfort me at the end of the day when I would return home, often tired and disillusioned. But God is great: He gave me food and He gave me friends who were my pillars of strength. I owe my success to God, who has always stood with me against the odds. I started my career as the assistant director of ‘Lakshman Rekha’ and ‘Angaar’. It was a sore struggle since I am not conventionally good-looking. When I got my first break as an actor (‘Dastak’), my close friends Jackie Shroff, Shashilal Nair and Tinu Anand were thrilled that finally I had bagged a film, that too with the then reigning Miss Universe Sushmita Sen! But, you know what? Even though I do go to the temple occasionally and thank God each night for everything that He has given me, I have never followed religious rituals. When I was a kid, my parents instilled in me that rituals have no meaning if your karma is not good; they taught me that God wants us to love our fellow human beings. Thus, I try to live by my motto: ‘be good to people’. My film ‘Lal Salaam’––which is based on the Naxalite movement––helped in cementing this conviction. Playing the character of an Adivasi and witnessing their life from close quarters taught me something very basic: to help the needy. I try to do this through an involvement with charitable causes, be it organising a rally to collect funds for flood relief in my hometown or gracing an event which requires ‘star presence’ to generate public interest towards a noble cause. For example, when a Hyderabad-based NGO working for street children approached a supermodel to grace their fund-raiser, she demanded a four-day stay at a luxury resort, leaving the NGO with no choice but to drop her. Since I was in Hyderabad at that time, I approached the NGO to attend their function and had a blast with the street kids. The way I look at it, I may not be in a position to donate crores of rupees to a cause but I can at least devote some of my time to it.
