Akki:

Mouse:

Mouse:

Sharad Kapoor: Success is a big high! By Jasmeen Dugal, Bollywood Trade News Network Unlike his onscreen image, Sharad Kapoor is charming and expressive, content with the way his career is of how shaping up; "I am aware rare it is for people to be able to do precisely what they want to do, so I am always grateful to God". Despite more than his fair share of setbacks, Sharad has carved a niche for himself in Bollywood. "I have always wanted to act in films for as long as I can remember. It wasn't for the glamour that is synonymous with Bollywood. Since childhood, I had rich friends. They drove around in foreign cars, worked out at health clubs, and went clubbing every weekend - I was always the hanger-on. Subconsciously, I have always aspired to be like them one day... I too wanted money and all the trappings that come it," reveals the actor. "My friends always told me that I had the height and the looks to make it in films. So one day I just shifted bag and baggage to Mumbai. I thought it was going to be easy - and I was wrong as hell! I don't know what it was like for everybody else, but for me it was a very painful process. 'Struggle' is the word I had to confront each morning. I didn't have to struggle physically but mentally there was a lot of strain on me. I was in a new city; my parents and friends were not there to support me. I had to go out alone - and struggle. It is not easy setting out each morning to meet filmmakers and coordinators - only to face rejection. I've shed a lot of tears. Each time I was rejected, I felt like a cast off; but I did not lose hope." "I started my career as the assistant director of LAKSHMAN REKHA and ANGAAR. Mahesh Bhatt saw me one day and called me over. He said I was perfect for a role in his forthcoming film (DASTAK) co-starring the then-reigning Miss Universe Sushmita Sen! What more could I ask for? It is all destinies. I spent so many years going door-to-door to meet filmmakers and here, such a prestigious film literally fell in my lap!" Post-DASTAK, he began making up for lost time, as films came in droves. JOSH co-starring Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai was his first box-office success and since then there is no looking back. Is it easy to get swayed by sudden success, I ask him? "Yes it is, and God knows I could have easily disappeared into the vicious circle of drink, women and adulation. Success is a big high. It can delude you into feeling it will always be your bedfellow but suddenly you wake up and the years have gone by. I was determined that I would not allow success to sway me. God knows I have worked hard for it."

Wait for a watershed Screen On & Off Sharad Kapoor in the city last week. Picture by Aranya Sen It has been years since he did Josh, but Sharad Kapoor still savours the film. The Shah Rukh Khan-Aishwarya Rai-starrer has, till now, been the high point of his 11-year-old career in Bollywood. Both SRK and Ash have gone places since then, but Sharad is still waiting for that one watershed moment in his celluloid life. A tarot-card reader has predicted that it will be sometime in mid-June 2006 and Sharad sure is keeping his fingers crossed. “Struggling for a place in Bollywood hasn’t been easy but I have had a great experience. I have a big flat and many cars now,” says the Calcutta boy who left home to be in the movies with “Rs 300” in his pocket and debuted along with Sushmita Sen in Dastak. In town to celebrate Diwali with friends and family, Sharad caught up with old acquaintances (one of them being Tollywood hero Jeet) and dropped in for dinner at his Outram Street restaurant Tangerine. Back in Bollywood, he has around three films going on the floors — You and I (tentative title) to be directed by art director Arup Adhikary; Anees Bazmi’s Radheshyam Sitaram, co-starring Aishwarya Rai, Suniel Shetty and Raj Babbar; and Nexus from Venus Films, with Vijay Raaz as co-actor. “I will play the main villain in Radheshyam Sitaram. It’s a comedy revolving round the mafia. In You and I, which is a story of two couples, I play a cop. Nexus is about world terrorism where I am a jihadi and it’s a very loveable character,” says Sharad, adding after a pause: “You know I started as a lead but got lost somewhere. When Josh happened, I didn’t even have my family’s support...” With the roles of leading men eluding him and a new hero being born every three months, is he feeling even more insecure? “No, not at all,” Sharad protests. “We are senior actors and that’s not a problem.” Yet, if Bollywood doesn’t have much to offer, the doors to Tollywood are always open. There’s a dearth of heroes in the industry here and the offers are trickling in, but they just aren’t good enough to enthuse Sharad. “I have done a couple of films here, including Satarupa Sanyal’s Kalo Cheeta with Rituparna Sengupta . But now I won’t agree if the proposal isn’t really good,” he stresses. Tollywood’s loss can be traced to its technology and its professionalism (or rather the lack of both).. Here people get late and that is a bother,” Sharad reasons.

nelke: Sharad Kapoor, back in the reckoning After a stint with television Sharad Kapoor joined the film industry and did have a dream debut with Dastak opposite none other than Sushmita Sen. But he didn't click in a big way as he had expected to. Many inconsequential films later he is back in the reckoning with Josh where he has been appreciated for his performance. He has even been getting positive vibes from industry bigwigs like Vashu Baghnani, Ramesh Taurani, Sanajay Leela Bhansali, Vidhu Vinod Chopra et al. Back in the limelight now, he is not looking for money right now but is concentrating on doing the right kind of films that will give him good exposure and hype. He has some good films lined up to strengthen his position further. He has signed David Dhawan's film with Salman Khan and is doing a guest appearance in Ahgaaz. He is also doing D Rama Naidu's next film. In Pranlal Mehta's film, he is playing the role of a cop and there is also another film for Tips and Venus under negotiation plus a project with KC Bokadia and Tahir Husain. Not worried about been typecast as a negative hero he wants to be typecast as a good actor who doesn't mind playing a romantic or negative character as long as its a good and powerful role. Sharad did not let the low phase in his career affect him. He was patient as he knew his time would come very soon and today he knows it has. He knew there was no point in doing bad films and felt it's better to be out of the limelight than do mediocre films.

Back with a bang by Upala K Basu Roy After making a much publicized debut with Miss Universe, Sushmita Sen, Sharad Kapoor disappeared into the blue for a couple of years. Josh has brought him back into the reckoning and proved that the fire has not dimmed. Producers have started queuing up outside his doorstep again and Sharad has reason to be optimistic. But the actor seems to have learnt his lessons. In a candid interview Sharad talks about Josh and reveals his plans for the future. Josh has got you back in the race. When did you know that this would be your comeback film? When I read Shobha De’s column. She said that Josh was a very good film and praised my performance saying I was brilliant in the film. Shobha De is a reputed critic. She notes every little detail when she reviews a film so a compliment from her is like manna from heaven. How confident were you of Josh? I knew the film would do well as soon as I saw the first trial. I’d been very impressed at the story sitting itself but at the time it was more Mansoor’s attitude than the film that had boosted my confidence. The way he narrated the character to me made me realize that it was a great role and I was just glad he had thought of me for it. You know, Mansoor had decided on me not after seeing Dastak but after chancing upon a serial on DD2 that I had been doing at the time. He told me to send him a tape of a particular episode of Aankhen and loved my performance so much that he told the producer Ratan Jain that he wanted only me to play Prakash. Of course, he was very honest that it was not the lead but a brilliant supporting role. He told me to sign up for the film only if I was convinced about the role. And were you, considering that Josh had a number of big names like Aishwarya Rai, Shah Rukh Khan and Chandrachur Singh and you were in danger of getting lost in the crowd? Weren’t you insecure at any point during the making of the film? No way. I had a mind-blowing role in Josh. My scenes were very well written and right from the beginning I knew that if I could come up with a hard-hitting performance and work really hard on my dialogue delivery, Prakash would make an impact. Both Shah Rukh and I had equal footage since both gangs were at par and if I seemed to get beaten up more than Max then it was because I irritate him so much that his fists start flying. (Smiles) And anyway, I’m not the only one who gets bashed up, I manage to land some hard knocks of my own too. Of course, I have to admit that Prakash was more the brainchild of Mansoor and Neeraj Vohra, the script-writer than mine. I remember the first time the three of us sat together and I was told that Shah Rukh was playing this very stylised, Goan-Christian guy while my character was that of a ghaati, I was kind of zapped. When Neeraj and Mansoor asked me how I wanted to play Prakash I quite honestly told them that I didn't have any ideas and that they would have to help me out. And they did. We worked on Prakash’s body language, his clothes and gestures, in fact, on every expression. Mansoor is a very good actor and he would enact the really difficult scenes for me. Even otherwise he’d explain everything to me in the minutest detail. He and Neeraj worked on every little nuance with me. I let them mould me in any which way they pleased. I’m a director’s actor and I won’t apologize for it. I remember him telling me once that I could do the role convincingly only if I had got into some really rough brawls when in school and college. I’m sure you must have had your own share of brawls. Reportedly when you were in Calcutta you were a regular dada and heading your own street gang. The experience must have come in handy when you were doing Josh? (Grins sheepishly) It did though I was never a dada. I would just hang out with the local badmaashs. I even brushed shoulders with some of the dons. I was a regular at the addas and had closely observed the mannerisms of these guys. The way they teased girls, got into lafdas and lorded over the mohallah. And these lessons came in handy when I was fleshing out Prakash. However, I never copied anyone, just borrowed some emotions and expressions. From Dastak to Josh, Sharad Kapoor has come a long way, right? (Grins) Right. I remember in the early days critics would rip my performances apart, railing at me for being too stiff and wooden. But the reviews of Josh haven’t been quite as scathing which leads me to believe that maybe I’ve improved. I’ve done about 7-8 films but there’s still so much more I need to learn. Things about the film industry and film techniques that I’m clueless about since I never went to an acting school. I need good directors like Mansoor to work on the nuances of my character with me. I need stars like Shah Rukh, Salman, Govinda, Hrithik and Abhishek to ensure that my projects are "safe". Dastak was a very big break for me and after it was released I just went haywire. I just signed all the wrong films because I didn’t have a star-father or a godfather to guide me. If you know someone big you don’t have to struggle. You end up with 10 big banners even before your first film hits the theatres. That’s the advantage star sons have over strugglers like me and I’m not bitter about the fact because after a while its your talent and luck that counts. If you’re destined to make it big it’ll happen, that’s my only consolation (Laughs). Hey, I did Josh with one of the most brilliant actors in the industry today, Shah Rukh Khan, and held my own, didn’t I? The fun of the game lies in the competition, right? Right. So what are the new films you’re all excited about? David Dhawan's film with Salman, Amisha, Rishi and Rati. It’s Ketan Desai’s production and I’m paired with Rinkie Khanna. Then there’s Aghaaz with Sunil Shetty and Sushmita Sen. A Naxalite drama with Om Puri and Nandita Das is sure to be pretty memorable even though it’s very off-beat. It’ll give me a chance to perform, earn some respect and make a name for myself in a different genre. Sameer Malkhan’s film for Venus with Aftab and T P Agarwal's next film are more commercial ventures. Regular masala medleys. At this point of time I want to do all kinds of films. Earlier I was working for money. I come from a middle-class family and after entering films I just went berserk and went on a signing spree. But now it’s not all that important to get myself a car and a house. Now my priority is to do good work and be known as a good actor. Today most of your contemporaries are either getting married or are going steady. When do you plan to settle down? Not for the next couple of years. Right now it’s going to be just work, work and more work.
