wichy: Интервью с Ашкой на шоу Сими Гаревал в это воскресенье - отсюда "I admire Robert De Niro. Who would have thought that in my first trip I would have actually got to meet him" – Aishwarya Rai By IndiaFM News Bureau, October 30, 2006 - 08:48 IST She is one of the most beautiful faces of the world. She is the jaan of millions. We are talking about the heart-throbbing diva Aishwarya Rai. Just before the release of her two big films (Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2), Aishwarya Rai gets in an exclusive rendezvous with Simi Garewal this Sunday at 9.30 p.m. on Star World. Below are excerpts from the rendezvous. Simi: Stunning, what do I say? Ash: I think it’s the work of the entire team … they put me together.. fixed me up... Simi: 8 years .. and we have a lot of catching up to do. Have you changed since then? Ash: We grow with experience obviously.. but in terms of being passionate about life .. that’s ongoing … Simi: Still a dreamer? Ash: Very much … you dream but you also work towards realizing your dream … Simi: At that time you did not have a hit film you know .. and you were not even in love .. wiser now… Ash: That’s for you to gauge… Simi: Wiser since then … Ash: You tell me … Simi: More at peace now Ash: I think a lot more. People whom I interact with, all of you, when they look at me they say I am seemingly a lot more at peace now. Definitely, a lot more comfortable with the world I belong. That was the beginning, my world was broadening, there was so much happening. In that sense, I wanted to tread carefully… Today it is my family, it is my world and I am a lot more comfortable here... Simi: But there has to be a great sense of achievement? Ash: I would be ungrateful to God’s blessings if I denied that. Simi: You’ve entered new worlds and… new people have entered your world as well, have any become friends or are they just bishops passing the knights? Ash: Actually, probably, I am to be blamed.. (laughs) Simi: You don’t keep in touch Ash: Look at you (laughs). Simi: Yes, I know (laughs). Ash: But I do have a friend in you Simi: You always admired Robert De Niro… Ash: Oh! I admire him as an actor. Who would have thought that in my first trip I would have actually got to meet him. He just came so normal.. and then after a while he was actually giving me advice…. Simi: Why are your performances in some films outstanding and in some forgettable … Ash: (laughs) .. it depends on which ones your are calling forgettable .. let’s not name them... Simi: No, we won’t name them … Ash: But I agree with you there are lot of them which are forgettable … Simi: How did you feel .. when you were removed from these films … big films, big banners … Ash: Ah! I guess at that time when you have no explanation you obviously are taken aback and confused of course and you wonder about it..

wichy: Ашке на этой неделе исполняется 33 Статейку про нее тиснули: здесь Aishwarya turns 33 this week -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By Arpana, IANS She rules the hearts of millions and is touted as one of the most beautiful actresses ever to grace Indian cinema. Aishwarya Rai, who turns 33 Wednesday, returns to the marquee after a long hiatus - playing a courtesan in "Umrao Jaan" and an oomph girl in "Dhoom 2". The actress, who is said to be dating Abhishek Bachchan, will reportedly announce her engagement on her birthday. According to insiders, Abhishek's ailing grandmother Teji Bachchan is eager to see him married, and the couple is said to be planning to tie the knot early next year. But Aishwarya, who is apparently attending family dinners and get-togethers at the Bachchan household, is tight-lipped about her relationship. She is currently busy promoting her two films. In Yash Raj Films' upcoming "Dhoom 2", Aishwarya plays a hi-tech thief along with Hrithik Roshan, while in J.P. Dutta's "Umrao Jaan", a screen adaptation of Mirza Mohammed Haadi Ruswa's Urdu novel "Umrao Jaan Ada" and a tragic historical, she plays a courtesan. "When Dutta narrated the script to me, I told him that if you get Aishwarya to play the role of Umrao Jaan only then make the film, else drop it. According to me, the character requires an enigmatic quality to it. This is what I feel Aishwarya's personality symbolises," said well-known lyricist Javed Akhtar on the actress. "Hers is a personality that is a kind of riddle. Even Dutta felt the same way and now after watching the finished product I feel that no one else could have made it." However, there is a notion among some that she is not a good actress and has hogged the limelight mainly for her looks, and her affairs with co-stars Salman Khan and Viveik Oberoi. "Aishwarya is not known as a bankable actor. People think of her as wooden. She can't emote. Dutta is not only a good director; he is also a good technician. He knows how to extract work from his artist. We are confident that Aishwarya must have played the role convincingly," New Delhi-based distributor Sanjay Mehta told IANS. "Umrao Jaan" and "Dhoom 2" will put to test her versatility. Critics believe that so far only Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been able to extract the best out of her in his hit "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" and "Devdas", India's official entry for the Oscars in 2003. Her being crowned Miss World in 1994 made her entry into films smooth. She was flooded with offers but chose to start her acting career with Mani Ratnam's Tamil film "Iruvar". Her performance was critically appreciated and she soon forayed into Bollywood with Rahul Rawail's "Aur Pyar Ho Gaya" opposite Bobby Deol. The film not only fetched her a Filmfare award for best debut but she had top-notch directors making a beeline for her house. She was soon signed up by one of the most talented filmmakers in the industry, Bhansali, for "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam". In this love triangle, which also had Ajay Devgan, she was paired for the first time with Salman Khan. Their onscreen chemistry was electrifying and the film was widely appreciated and fetched her Filmfare's best actress award. She started receiving offers from some of the biggest names in the industry - Subhash Ghai, Yash Chopra and Mansoor Khan. Chopra signed her up with Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan in "Mohabattein". The film didn't do well but the audience liked her pairing with Shah Rukh. Bhansali cast the two in his magnum opus "Devdas" that went on to become a major hit. Post-"Devdas" Aishwarya shifted her focus to Hollywood. Her first international venture was Gurinder Chadha's "Bride & Prejudice". The film was a flop but it didn't stop her from getting new projects. Some of her prestigious international projects include - "Provoked", "The Last Legion" opposite Colin Firth and Sir Ben Kingsley and "Chaos". While scaling new heights in Bollywood and international films, Aishwarya never crossed the line in terms of skin show on screen. "I am not comfortable about kissing or nudity. I am clear about what I want. I'll work only with good directors who'll offer me two-dimensional roles. The director and the role are most important. "Women in the industry have been exploited very often but there are some actors who believe that the short cut to stardom is through nudity or exposure. Such success is, in fact, very short-lived. I have never done a kissing scene nor do I have intentions to," she is quoted as saying. Since she set foot in filmdom, the India media has been sometimes nasty to her but she hasn't bothered much about what they thought or wrote about her. "Someone asked me why I'm politically correct, even when people hit out so openly at me. But the truth is I've never been brought up to behave any other way. I can't say anything hurtful about anyone. I just don't believe in saying mean things. I won't feel good doing that. This is the way I am. "I'm amazed how many people feel good hitting out at me. They're welcome to do it. Earlier, they had more leeway to deny their indiscretions in print. But now on television they look pretty ridiculous denying what they say," she has said. Apart from promoting a wide variety of disparate brands, Aishwarya has many firsts to her credit - she has the distinction of being the first Indian actor to be a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival and also appeared on Oprah Winfrey's talk show. About her appearance on Winfrey's show, she told the media: "I never thought I'd actually be meeting her -- and that too, on her show! I was extremely happy to be on her show. I admire her." She also appeared on another prestigious American talk show "60 Minutes". She has graced the covers of international magazines like TIME, which placed her on their list of the "100 Most Influential People in the World Today". Aishwarya has also been termed as one of the most beautiful women by TIME magazine. Aishwarya, whose last Hindi release was "Shabd" that sank without a trace at the box office, is hoping to hit the bull's eye with "Umrao Jaan", "Dhoom 2" and Mani Rathnam's "Guru". While "Umrao Jaan" releases next Friday, "Dhoom 2" is set for a Nov 24 release and "Guru" in December.

wichy: Интересное интервью с Ашкой с rediff.com 'When I get married, you'll know' November 1, 2006 When was the last time Aishwarya Rai gave a big hit? Scratch your head, for the answer won't come instantly. It was in 2002 with Devdas. Before that she had Hum Dil De Chuke Hai Sanam but both films ran on Khan-power, featuring Shah Rukh and Salman as the major draws. But Aishwarya Rai, who turns 33 on November 1, is not too bothered. "My reason for choosing a film is not to impress people," says the lovely Aishwarya. "I don't choose films for the box office." And well she might, because no other actress commands her kind of attention. Rai, poised for another big year ahead, spoke to Chief Correspondent Syed Firdaus Ashraf about marriage, her career and this Friday's release, Umrao Jaan. Read on. In the next two months you have three films releasing -- Umrao Jaan, Dhoom 2 and Guru. How far do you think they would decide your future? I don't think they are a deciding factor to my career. This has never been my perspective from the day I started work in the industry. For me, some films worked and some didn't: If Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam worked then Aa Ab Laut Chale didn't. Though you are the top heroine in the country, none of your recent films set the box office afire, did they? I think it is the film that works and not the actors. Irrespective of my box office result, my distributors and producers are generous and tell me I bring value to film. And I am thankful to audiences and them for this support. My producers and distributors think positively about me. Just because my Kajra Re worked last year, they haven't just given me those [item] songs; they have given me different characters. I have taken risks in life. I have enjoyed doing parallel cinema and regional cinema even after the success of Devdas. I have not gotten trapped in doing only blockbusters, because of insecurities. My audiences have freed me from insecurities. My director and producers have given me the luxury of doing cinema. I am happy to grow as an actor and not be trapped in successful formulas or working only in certain banners or successful pairings. I am free to work with different actors, and the director can choose my co-star -- and I am happy for that. Kajra Re was a turnaround for you, giving your image some oomph... [Bunty Aur Babli producer] Aditya Chopra told me either I would do it, or he would not do the song in the film. I think that was very sweet of him. Kajra Re was my only release last year and all year it was there on the screens because it was the biggest hit song of the year. It was a special moment because Abhishek and Amitji [Bachchan] came together for the first time on the big screen. Therefore it was very special to me too. And now comes Dhoom 2, where you are in bikinis. Even more oomph. Ah, but you talked about oomph for Shabd also. I am glad that even in very different characters of mine, you can see oomph. I must say, I plan my time and have to dedicate myself to a great level to give a better look in the film. It is exhausting to get ready, with the amount of time it takes. In Umrao Jaan I made the inner parts of my lips red so that it looks like I chew paan regularly. These are things you add to your character. I feel these little details are important, and I feel great if audiences notice. Do you get time to read gossip about you and Abhishek? How do I put it? (laughs) You have to give an answer to it if I say no (laughs). There's so much buzz about the relationship. Everyone's talking about marriage, etc. (Laughs) That is their love and concern. 'Whom is she going to be with finally in life? Whom will she marry?' The audiences feel I am part of their life so they worry about me. I think that is very sweet of them and I tell them that when I will marry I will announce it. When I get married, you'll know. I believe in marriage and it is a beautiful institution. People call the new Don a more stylised Don. How would you describe the new Umrao Jaan? That is for the audiences to decide. They will give their own judgement. They don't bother about all these labels because they just want to see a good film. You have broken into Hollywood, but by doing films like Provoked and Mistress of Spices, don't you feel you are damaging your career by doing B-grade films? It is a very tricky situation when you get the chance to work in English films. I do films based on characters, not to get an entry into Hollywood or whatever. In English, my Bride & Prejudice did well world over. I don't know how it did in Hindi, but I know Jurassic Park too didn't do well in Hindi. I was glad audiences worldwide liked an English film that was Indian. When I did Mistress of Spices, I did it for Paul [Mayeda Berges, the director and husband of Gurinder Chadha] as a team. The film found its audiences. When the Provoked script came to me, I felt it was a very important story of an Indian woman based in London who killed her husband because of marital abuse. Kiranjit Ahluwalia made a big impression in England, and so I did this film because I felt it was an important story to be told. Provoked is an important film for many other Kirans in the world. As far as The Last Legion is concerned, it is a film based on a book [A novel by Valerio Manfredi]. I don't think the character of Meera [her role] is there in the book. I did the film for the new experience and it is for the first time that I was with a complete foreign crew. Working with Ben Kingsley was a great experience. Meera is an Indian in the film and she has great roots and you will identify with her strength. I feel for Indian audiences, and want them to feel pride in what I am doing: I am not doing films just to be there as guest appearances. Is it true you are learning horse riding and sword fighting for Jodha-Akbar? Yes, I am going to learn riding soon. As far as sword fighting is concerned, I learnt that during The Last Legion. Does it mean Jodha fights with swords in the film? You wait and watch! I will not say anything but maybe director Ashutosh Gowarikar wants us to get ready, and be prepared. These are exciting times for me!

Ash: "I do want to marry!..." Astrologers love ‘speculating’ on Aishwarya Rai’s love and marriage? "Frankly, I didn’t know astrology could be so entertaining. It certainly made for great half hour specials. Even we were tuning into all that stuff – like, 'Hey, what’s all this about?' It was good viewing." There’s so much talk about your ‘marriage’. When’s D-day anyway? "Look, I do want to marry. When the announcement comes from me officially, you and the world will know about it. There’s nothing to hide - I believe in it. It’s a beautiful institution. I leave it to God. My family and my man’s family will be the deciding factor as to when, how and when you will know about it." At one time you were so west-focused – the foreign media loving you totally – but of late you seem to be making more news in desiland… "No! Somewhere I’ve been misrepresented or misunderstood. Right from the time of my doing my first English film. In all my interviews, from the time I began Bride & Prejudice, I’ve always said I’d do an English film in the same way I did a Tamil or Bengali film. I’m based in India. As actors we’re gypsies; so we go where work takes us in physical terms. And over the past ten years my family has witnessed that; I’ve hardly been home. Not necessarily because I started English films. Some members of the media have got this wrong or it’s got lost in translation in the written word." "I’ve not gone away because I’m working in English films, I am doing it because opportunity knocked at my door to do so. I’ve always been available and have evidently worked in many Hindi films consistently. I am what I am because of my Indian audience. I’ve done Bengali, Tamil and English films because I’ve been fortunate to have films come by me rather than me looking out for them. You don’t do varied cinema because you are no longer into your cinema. You don’t do a Raincoat because you’re no longer a commercial actor. I want to break all these myths. Directors can’t slot me as a typical kind of actor. They see me in varied roles." Preity Zinta has been quoted as saying that irrespective of what others may say, only one Indian star gets recognized on the Cannes red carpet – and that’s Ash. Comment? She’s a dear friend and it was very sweet of her to say that. I appreciate it." But wouldn’t that discount the appearance of say, a Mallika Sherawat, who’d shared glory on the same carpet? "Not at all. Mallika was invited there as a member of a team of the movie ‘The Myth’ - that was the reason for her being there; because she was a core member of the film. She had every right to be there as a representative of her project." For the Mani Rathnam film Lajjo weren’t you the first choice before Kareena? The tabloids were speculating that post the Mangal Panday experience, Aamir wasn’t keen you do the project? I leave it to Manisir to comment; but the fact is that he had spoken to me of Lajjo. Later, he discussed Guru and I told him I’d do any film with him because such is my relation with him. 'You’re my first director, my guru,' I said. So whatever he asked I’d be happy to do. He told me we’d be doing Lajjo later, after Guru; It was 'yes' from me and here I am in Guru. I don’t know what happened with Lajjo – I just heard of it. That’s it. And knowing Mani, I’m sure he has the right reasons for it. He’s just so clear-headed." Already there’s talk of Dhoom 3 with you and Shah Rukh in it. The talk had a couple of names in it. But I always leave it to the producer or director to make the announcements. Unless there’s a team conducting a press conference for it. There have been speculations, yes; I did see my name featured there as well but I leave it to Adi to make any announcements if he sees me in the project." After your sizzling screen chemistry with Hrithik, guess people should simply flock to see the ‘good-looking Moghuls’ in Jodha Akbar. Is a story really needed? "We’re here in cinema, always telling a story. That’s what creates the magic. That’s where the director, the visionary plays the most important role. He’s the captain of the ship. The magician who takes the audience through a visual and emotional journey. As long as you’re in the narrative you won’t know whether it’s a visual or emotional journey. That’s when you capture the audiences’ fascination." Comparisons with Rekha’s Umrao Jaan and your adaa have been fast and furious? "I say that we’re actors and we’re greedy and we’re completely thrilled when we get fantastic characters to essay irrespective of whether they’ve been captured before, in our cinema or in any international cinema. Great characters are always extremely inviting and we have the privilege to replay them; that’s something I recognize, respect, acknowledge. Every actress does not get these opportunities." As for me having done a film that’s been done wonderfully before; which Rekhaji is synonymous with, I’m thankful for. To me it’s an honour. In terms of comparisons, it’s not me who has done so. It’s the media or the audiences who do that. That goes with the territory. I can only say that Rekhaji and I have a wonderful relationship in sense of a ‘connection’ that was made even before I joined films. She was probably amongst the first people who’d seen me when one of my earliest commercials was out." I was at 16th Road, Khar, when she spotted me, came upto me and said in her deep haunting voice, 'Ash!' We all turned around and everybody was totally shocked on seeing Rekha in a white salwar kameez, pink lipstick, looking stunning. She said, 'I’ve seen your photographs and I know you will be in the movies. You’re mine… I’ll see you around.' Even now, wherever we meet, at public functions or premieres, she’s always personally connected to me. Very encouraging, always positive. I’m thrilled that we’re compared in similar vein."
