Or the ‘bonfire of female vanities’ in the eyes? Possibly a potent mix of all. But success or no success; hits or none at all - Abhishek Bachchan’s ‘charisma cocktail’ could put any Long Island Ice Tea to shame. I’ve seen some pretty successful heroes appear diminutive and ‘ashen’ faced around junior B’s confident swagger. But don’t get fooled for a minute. Beneath the flamboyance lies a pretty ‘humble’, ‘modest’ lad. And as insecure, probably, as you and me. Flashback to three years ago: Abhishek seated at a large wooden desk in his classy ‘Jalsa’ home. I’d dropped by to interview Mrs Jaya Bachchan; meeting the rugged Abhi was a bonus. I’d casually asked if he was planning to follow in ‘dad’s footsteps’ and he’d touched the teakwood before mumbling, “I wish!” Today, with success his cohort and sexed-up his retort, Abhishek hasn’t lost any of that humility. But he still touches wood when asked if he was following in his legendary father’s enormous strides. “I’m following in his footstep … in the same way that I’m an actor; but I have a very very long way to go. Every actor aspires to be like him, wants to achieve what he has. Every actor wants to conquer what he has conquered. He fixes you with a look of smoldering coals before replying,“Success cannot be credited to any one particular person. The credit goes to the entire team. After all, filmmaking is a team effort. If there’s any one person who has the right to take the credit it’s the director. Keeping that in mind, I’m just somebody who’s been lucky to be on the correct ride at the right point of time.” Still, I interrupted, he’d worked for some great directors, but the films hadn’t … “It depends from film to film. No one can claim that a film will be a guaranteed success. You have to work hard, do your best; work as sincerely as possible and leave the rest to God and audiences. Sometimes they like you, sometimes they don’t - that still doesn’t mean you’ve done it all by yourself.” His eyes were twinkling now. And why not? He was the ‘current hottie’. He must’ve expected it to happen? “Every actor expects it to happen to them. That’s what we work for. We’re striving to be good at what we do; and most importantly to achieve what we set out to achieve - to entertain. If you manage to do that in one film, it gives you the confidence to continue doing it.” And did the spate of ‘brand endorsements’ further endorse his success? “I don’t think so, endorsements have got nothing to do with your success. It’s just something you choose to or want to do alongside movies.” Of course, choosing to be the ‘Aaah’ factor for the women was something that came with the territory? A tinge of blush coloured the poker face. They all need to wear glasses. It’s very embarrassing … Really, it’s very embarrassing. I’m not complaining about it though; as long as they look upon me favorably I have reason to be happy. Though I’d much rather they think of me as a good actor.” Yeah right … and I’d rather be a pirate of the Caribbean .. but the good ol’ machismo seemed to be back in vogue. In fact, in a recent interview Daddy B had clearly slotted himself and junior as ‘retrosexual’. Your take? He looked bemused. “What is retrosexual? I don’t understand these terms but I would like to believe I am a man, I don’t know how old-fashioned I am. If Dad thinks so, I’m sure he knows what he’s talking about. You’re talking about the good old days right? When a man was a man and woman was a woman? When there weren’t different classifications and different genres of men? Frankly, I don’t understand metrosexual, retrosexual, petrosexual.” But did ‘real men’ sing? Today, even when you croon a tune it becomes a chart-buster, King Midas? “Maane ki nazar laga ke chodenge aap log! That was a joke, a mistake. It happens when you have close friends directing a film for you. The song ‘Right Here, Right Now’ was done in jest. I’m glad people liked it so much.” On a more serious note, senior Bachchan had said that when he was working very hard trying to set up the family, he was unable to devote enough time at home; something he’s trying to make up for now. Did that make you closer to your mom? “I am close to both my parents, credit for which goes to my Mom. She never let my sister and me ever feel that dad wasn’t there. Dad always made a point to be there when we needed him. Be it birthday party, the school annual day, or Parents’ Day. He was always there when it mattered. But Mom was the one who never let us feel his absence on the few occasions when he was missing.” There’s this story of your Dad, when you were studying in Boston, apparently standing in queue for you; quite uncomfortable; till he saw Roger Moore next to him in the next line? “Yes, well … that was back in school. Indeed it was quite a sight - Mr. Roger Moore, Sophie Loren and Dad standing in line. With all of them looking at their kids’ respective report cards, nodding their heads in disdain, thinking …’ What have we produced’? It was quite entertaining actually!” And on the topic of ‘report cards’, he’d worked with some real beauties. Wasn’t he attracted to them at some point? Again the straight-faced reply, “I love all my co-stars. I’ve been very lucky with them; I’ve had wonderful co-stars who’ve taken great care of me. And today they’ve all turned into great friends of mine. I’ve had the fortune of working with people I know and am fond of. There’s no question of attraction, its like friends getting together and spending time with each other.” Oh yeah?! What about off-screen? This time he allowed himself a grin, “No I’m generally a very loving person, I like many people. I like to spread the love.” Touche! But the probe wasn’t about to let up. What about all the talk about him and the lovely Aishwarya making this beautiful couple together. Comment dude? The media makes enough comments on this on their own, so I don’t see why I should spoil their party. On a personal note I think it is very disrespectful to talk about women like that. I hold women in the highest of regard and I would not discuss anybody’s mother, sister or daughter in such a way, I just believe it’s not right. The media can go ahead and do what they wish, whatever makes you happy.” Still, didn’t he want to tie the knot? Any plans? The eyes opened wide, “You mean getting married? No plans whatsoever for now. I’ve been very busy, I’m enjoying my work and I want to concentrate on just that right now.”

I think I've a very important role to play in the film. Thank you, Karan! Everyone wants to know how you know so much about marriages? I've no knowledge of a marriage whatsoever. I just followed Karan's directions very obediently. The credit for whatever you consider to be my performance in KANK must go to Karan. Tell me about the first-hand responses to your performance? I don't know! I've been very busy working on Dhoom 2. I haven't had a chance to interact with people too much. But I'm always thrilled when my work gets noticed. But like I said I can't take any credit for it. I'm not trying to be modest. I'm not a modest person. I'm a realist. I know who's done what in KANK. The real hero of the film is Karan Johar. Do you think the controversies are good for KANK? What controversies? There's debate on KANK, not controversy. The good thing about debate is you get both negative and positive but always-healthy reaction to the film. Very few films get that. Whether you agree with KANK or not, it's taken Karan to a new level. I think he has unfairly been labeled 'a candyfloss maker'. The mistaken belief that he makes frivolous films has fallen to the ground. I think Karan is a very important director in the history of Indian cinema. KANK is a sensitive work. Do you think Karan took a big risk in moving away from his comfort zone? The best part is, Karan isn't judgemental, just observant on marriages and extra-marital affairs. He isn't telling people to leave their spouses. He just asks a harsh but real question - what if you meet your soul-mate after marriage? Shah Rukh and Rani are the protagonists. But Preity and I are never shown as negative characters. In fact I find the relationship between our characters quite fascinating. What about your relationship with Rani? I felt Karan should have given my character Rishi something negative to do. He loves his wife immensely. He's basically trying to be as perfect a husband and can be. And that's how the audience has perceived my character. Despite that, Rani's character moves away. So I felt Karan needed to give my character some dark areas. Whereas Shah Rukh's character does have reason to stray because his wife has no time for him, my character's wife has no such alibi. Why does Rishi-Maya's relationship break up? Why? That's exactly what I kept asking Karan. He told me, 'One could be in a seemingly perfect marriage. Still your spouse may not connect with you.' I thought that was a very intriguing thought, put forward beautifully in the film. We never thought everyone would unanimously love the film. We hoped they'd discuss it. And Karan has pulled it off . Generally such discussions and debates are for art-house films? For me such categorization makes no sense. To me a film is a film is a film…. Do you think an Indian wife would move off from a marriage to the ideal husband, the way Rani does? Of course! Such things do happen. Are extra-marital affairs an inevitable part of contemporary society? No, they're neither inevitable nor justified. I'm totally against extra-marital affairs. I'd personally never have an affair after marriage. But I won't be judgemental about those who do.

wichy: Abhishek Bachchan finds a new fan in Mani Ratnam -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just recently there was a buzz that whoever has caught a sneak peak of Mani Ratnam’s GURU cannot stop raving about Abhishek Bachchan. Apparently it’s a landmark role for Aby baby and is one of his finest performances so far. According to reports in a tabloid, he has been Mani Ratnam’s favourite ever since YUVA days and he is very impressed by Abhishek. He only wanted to cast Bachchan Junior in GURU and the latter agreed to do it without any second thoughts. He has a grey shade to his character that spans over a period of 40 years. Well its not just Abishek who has smitten the talented director. "This is a toy watch that my mom gave me when I was two or three," said Abhishek Bachchan. The watch Abhishek is referring to is his first watch ever. Now of course, the superstar prefers ultra-luxury timepieces - the Rs 2 lakh worth Seamaster series from Omega for one - which he launched at a stylish event in Mumbai. Time is certainly on his side and he is happy endorsing it. So what does the sexiest man in Asia has to say about Omega’s recently launched Seamaster series. "It is one of the sexiest things I have worn on my wrist. I was just telling Omega people that now that they have chosen me for the Seamaster series, I will make sure that I wear it by the sea." he quipped. Everybody faces moments in time when we feel that the time should stop ticking. Have there been any such moments in his life really? "No, I have never ever wished the time should stop. I am too happy with the time ticking along. It keeps you on your feet and keeps you going" he said. The next few months will see a lot of Abhishek’s much-anticipated films like Umrao Jaan, Dhoom II and Guru. So, are the expectations really high? "I think actors generally expect for the best. We hope and pray for the best. We all have put in a lot of hard work into it. The upcoming three films Umrao Jaan, Dhoom II and Guru are very close to my heart. I have worked very hard on these three films and I am keen to see the audiences’ reaction to it. I am very excited and a bit nervous too," he said. Well, nervousness should be the last thing on Abhishek’s mind, especially after being voted as the sexiest man in Asia by a UK-based tabloid. "Which freak of nature voted me that? "We aren't supposed to talk about it at all. We don't know where the album is going right now. All we know is it'll be something on an international scale. We're thinking big over this project. "But Abhishek is busy. So it's up to him and Amitji (who does a track). So far, we've only been jamming together. If it happens the album will be a milestone," Vishal, the more vocal of the composing duo, told IANS. Director Rohan Sippy, who made it big with "Bluffmaster", is going to produce this album. Firstly, I don’t speak like that. Secondly, I’d never be rude to officials who are merely doing their job. It’s not their intention to harass you. Considering what the world situation is, we must all co-operate and be patient,” he says. Meanwhile, Abhishek refuses to be flattered by being chosen Asia’s ‘sexiest man’ by a magazine. “I don’t even know what sexy means. Although no celebrations are on the cards this year, Abhishek makes it a point to be with his dad every year on his birthday… Actually, this year, he’s looking forward to it more since he has been overcome by a bout of homesickness. Having completed a chunk of the shooting for Shaad Ali’s Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom in London he has now moved with the unit to Paris. “I miss home, especially since my grandmother is in the hospital. Also the release of the Umrao Jaan’s music soundtrack was on Saturday… a big moment for all of us who have been working on this project. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible for the music company to hold over the release until my return. Nor was it practical for me to fly back to Mumbai for a day. So I just had to miss the occasion,” he says.
