olga: 'Disco Dancer' Mithun still a favourite in Kazakhstan By Ranjana Narayan New Delhi, Nov 28 (IANS): "Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, aaja, aaja", the song from Mithun Chakraborty's 1982 blockbuster "Disco Dancer" is a favourite with Marina Maximova and many others from her country, Kazakhstan. But current heartthrob Shah Rukh Khan is unknown there. Marina, editor-in-chief of Almaty TV, cannot understand Hindi but loves Mithun's films as well as those of Bollywood legend Raj Kapoor. "The films are so sensitively made, so beautiful," Maximova said in Russian, which was translated by her colleague Irina Kunanbayeva. "Indian films are very popular in our country. We have film clubs where the films are shown," Maximova told IANS here. She was in the capital along with Kunanbayeva, a freelance journalism trainer, and Alexandr Gabchenko, producer with television web service Stan.tv. The three were here last week to attend a workshop, "Template for Multi Media Training Manual on HIV/AIDS Reporting for Media Professionals", sponsored by Unesco. "Sita Aur Gita", the 1972 hit film that had Hema Malini in a double role, is another film that Maximova remembers. But ask about Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and other current reigning actors - and one draws a blank. "Yes, there is someone very beautiful, some Rai," ventures Gabchenko. "Oh, Aishwarya Rai," you suggest helpfully, to which he replies, "Yes, she's the one." But the mention of Mithun's name lights up their expressions. "He is a favourite with us. Last year, Mithun was a special invitee at a function and all his fans were waiting eagerly for him. But he failed to turn up. We were all very disappointed," said Gabchenko. There is a special channel in Kazakhstan that beams only Indian films, music and entertainment programmes, which are quite popular, said the strikingly pretty Kunanbayeva. The Indian embassy there is also quite active and organises film programmes, Hindi teaching classes, yoga and other activities, she said. On the status of HIV/AIDS in their country, Maximova informed that Kazakhstan has more than 8,500 HIV positive cases in a population of 16 million and there have been 500 deaths so far. The government is quite active in its intervention programmes and has launched the National Programme for AIDS Prevention, under which it provides free treatment, medicines, condoms and syringes, counselling and also guarantees access to education. Some cases of discrimination against HIV positive people do come to light, especially in hospitals, workplaces and in families, but the government is trying to tackle it, said Maximova. The virus is spread mainly through intravenous drug users and migrant labour coming from Kyrgyzstan , Uzbekistan and Tajikistan , she said adding that in the last few years, sexual contact has also become one of the causes. A major problem that the administration faces in the country is the distance factor. There are 14 cities in Kazakstan that are not heavily populated. The cities are spread over a large territory and it becomes difficult to track people and reach out to everyone in order to conduct camps, said Kunanbayeva. The group has prepared a document on HIV/AIDS in their country, the first such, and it has received a positive response from international agencies, she informed. Confirming the news Mithun said, “I can understand that the presence of glamorous stars is important so that the festival is talked and written about. But at the same time you cannot ignore the contribution of technicians and workers towards the making of a film. I have always been concerned about their cause and will continue to support them.” Mithun said that ever since he became aware of the problems faced by workers in the industry, he took on the responsibility of being their guardian. “I have been the chairman of the Allied Mazdoor Union for the last 14 years. During this tenure I realised that these labourers who worked so hard on the sets had nobody whom they could share their problems with. Today they know that they have someone who will listen to them.” Mithun said that in the last 14 years, the union has established a strong foundation. “I can proudly say that the union has Rs 15 crore saved in the bank. Lightmen, spotboys and technicians deserve their due, let's give it to them. I wanted to be there with Samir Chanda for the premiere of my film. The two films that the Chakraborty heir had signed with old family-friend Raj Sippy, namely Jimmy and Seven (the latter a remake of Sippy’s Bachchan hit Satte Pe Satta ) show no signs of hitting theatres in the immediate future. Though outwardly all’s calm in the Chakraborty household, in private Mithun has expressed grave concern about the false starts in his son’s career. But now the worried Papa can breathe easy. Finally Mimoh has found himself a project whose producer will ensure the film’s completion and also its high-profile marketing and release. Suniel Shetty has donned the cloak of Mimoh’s godfather. Suniel has signed Mimoh for one of the principal roles in the action-comedy Loot. Reluctant to divulge details the eternally-modest Shetty says, “I don’t know about Mimoh’s other projects. But I’ve given him a fantastic role in Loot. The film will roll around March and will also star Govinda (another one of Mithun’s loyal and long-standing colleagues) and me.” The film to be co-produced by Suniel Shetty’s Popcorn Entertainment and TV18, will be directed by Rajnish. “A terrific writer-director and another proud discovery of Popcorn Entertainment,” says Suniel who has just returned from Turkey for Mission Istanbul. “After that I took off to visit some very old ancestral temples in Mangalore. That pilgrimage to my home town has given me a renewed sense of peace,” say Suniel.

Don Muthuswamy This film is being made by Asim Samanta, son of Shakti Samanta. It’s a comedy and I play a notorious don whose father coaxes him into promising at his deathbed that he would quit this path for good. But the moment Don Muthuswamy decides to go clean, problems start cropping up from all quarters. His wife, daughter, neighbours — all drive him mad. The situations are hilarious. It will remind the audience of my role of the blabbering Tamilian, Krishna Iyer MA, in Agneepath. Heroes I have some great co-stars in this film, including Salman Khan and Priety Zinta. It’s being directed by Samir Karnik. I play Dr Nagvi, the emotional father of a boy who has been killed in war. It is about how he deals with the memory of his son. There is a lot of turmoil in my character. He is completely shattered and tormented by the death of his only son. There are various shades. Nowadays, I only focus on the character. Neither the director nor the story matters much. I am game if I find my portion interesting. But I am also very particular about what I portray on screen. I still do my share of homework, like reading the script and going through the dialogues. Phir Kabhi I play a 65-year-old married man who cannot forget his first love. Dimple (Kapadia) plays my lover, while Rati (Agnihotri) is my wife. And my granddaughter (newcomer Neha) is the only one who knows about this long-lost affair; she helps me out. The film deals with the idea of eternal love. It’s a beautiful love story, directed by Hari. It’s his first film. My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves I have a special appearance in this E. Niwas film. I am the father in a church who runs an orphanage where he teaches martial arts to kids. My role is very brief but I found the character interesting. Zindagi Tere Naam This film, directed by Ashu Tirkha, is very close to me. It will mark the return of Ranjeeta and me together after almost 24 years. We play two elderly characters who are in love. But I won’t reveal much about my character. Basically, it’s a love story. We shot a portion of the film in Dalhousie in Srinagar. I became very nostalgic while shooting with Ranjeeta. Memories came rushing back. We were considered to be the best pair of the Seventies and we starred in a host of films together. Ranjeeta is also my lady luck; whichever film I was paired opposite her was a superhit. I owe a lot to her. C Company Balaji is the producer of this film and Sachin Yardi is the director. Here too I play a don but this one is obsessed with TV artistes! He is a complete madcap. Television is like his extended family and he religiously follows all the serials. He cries and laughs with the characters! The film also stars Raima Sen and Tusshar Kapoor. Ghosla In this V. Prakash film, I play a disturbed sculptor who leaves home and starts living on the pavements after a fight with his family members. The film traces his journey.

Pregnant with messages - such as the value of female education (still a burning issue in rural India), the rigidity of the caste system, the divisive forces of religion, the bugbear of bureaucracy and even the evils of tobacco chewing, -- the Bengali language movie nonetheless goes beyond these to tell a poignant story of a father's fight to immortalize his daughter's name. Gripping enough to even attract non-festival arthouse crowds, it scores with its plot and visual imagery. When college-going (the first girl in her village to do so) Anjana, or Anu as she is fondly called, dies on the banks of the river she adored, her grief-stricken father begins a crusade to rename it after her. He hits a wall with an unfeeling bureaucracy and a political system that might change any number of other names, but not of this river. Everyone is curious, and saying that you’re back after 20 years. I’ve lost count. Mithun must have told them it’s been 20 years. How did you think of returning suddenly? I didn’t think of it by myself. My first reaction, when the film was offered to me, was to say ‘no’. But the director, Ashu Trikha, was persistent. Then, of course, Mithun was very excited at the idea of us doing a film together. How did it feel to wear make-up again, after so long? It felt so much lighter and better than when I used to act. Then, there would be entire inches of pancake on me, with my eyeliner touching my ears. Now, the make-up that’s used actually transforms the face to make it look better! Did the acting come easy or was it a challenge to get back to it after so long? Oh, I must have hammed a bit this time. But Mithun was very good. To answer your question, it was pretty easy. I’ve always enjoyed being before the camera, and I still do, I discovered. What was the strongest memory evoked while you were shooting for this film? It was while doing a song sequence, actually, that I got most nostalgic. I remember song and dance sequences used to be my bane, while shooting. I’m just not a dancer, could never be. People would say, “Ghodi jaisi nachti hai.” What do you feel when you watch your old hits now, like Tarana or Suraksha? (Laughs) At that time, I used to think they were good films. But I do feel embarrassed by them now. When I see myself in a pink mini skirt in Suraksha, with thunder thighs showing, I wonder what was I thinking! Has your son seen your films? Yes, my son is in the tenth standard. He has seen many of my films. When he was younger he used to feel embarrassed and ask me why I did all those films. But as he grew up. Now, he’s quite proud of me. Had you kept in touch with Mithun? No. But shooting with him again after all these years was so easy.

olga: Dubai, November 27, 2007: The Dubai Inter INDIAN STARS GRACE THE RED CARPET AT 2007 DUBAI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL national Film Festival (DIFF) takes place from December 9 to 16, and as in years past, Indian artists will descend on the city with the best films of the year. Powerhouse director Mira Nair s ensemble film AIDS Jaago will bring a veritable swarm of Indian cinematic talent to the DIFF Gala red carpet. In a joint effort between Nair s Mirabai films and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Nair recruited four of India s most cutting-edge directors to each helm a short narrative film about HIV/AIDS. Nair s segment, Migration, stars Shiney Ahuja, Raima Sen, Sameera Reddy and Irfan Khan. Both Nair and Raima Sen will be at DIFF to celebrate the film s screening, as will Farhan Akhtar, who directed the segment called Positive. Akhtar, who made last year s blockbuster Don with Shah Rukh Khan, is one of Mumbai s most prominent directors. Internationally acclaimed director and cinematographer Santosh Sivan brings both Parambha, one of the AIDS Jaago shorts, and Before the Rains, set in India in the 1930 s against the backdrop of the growing nationalist movement. The film stars rugby player cum social activitist and arthouse actor Rahul Bose in a conflict of loyalties between his village and his British boss. Bose is also confirmed to grace the DIFF proceedings. Naseeruddin Shah will bring the World Premiere of his latest starrer, Shoot on Sight, a taut thriller in which he plays a Scotland Yard Inspector with divided loyalties investigating a fatal police shooting of an alleged terrorist. Co-star Laila Rouass will appear by Shah s side to promote the film. From Kerala, master director Adoor Gopalakrishnan and his leading actress, South Indian star Padma Priya will be on hand for the screening of 4 Women, about the issue of matrimony in the lives of four women from different social classes. The revised international director s cut of Taj Mahal will bring the great Kabir Bedi and ex-supermodel Pooja Batra, who star as Shah Jahan and his wife in the sprawling epic, one of the most expensive films ever to be made in India. Co-star Manisha Koirala will also be present at DIFF, where the audience will be the first in the world to see the Director s Cut, introduced and discussed by Bedi himself with director Akbar Khan. Another veteran star, Mithun Chakraborty (Guru, Dil Diya Hai), will attend the screening of Story of the Red Hills, in which he plays a broken-hearted Bengali Chhou dancer who finds a new lease on life through launching a dance ensemble. Leetah: Девушки-митхунистки, я все-таки призываю вас не поддаваться на провокацию и оставаться сдержанными и вежливыми. Девушка - новенькая, высказалась, непонятно почему в этой теме, с таким же успехом она могла это написать в любой другой. Другая поддержала очень некрасивым постом, чем естественно вызвала бурю негодования с вашей стороны. Зачем сравнивать? Это глупо. Каждый хорош по-своему. Не нарушайте и без того шаткий мир в этой темке. Давайте просто не обращать внимания на подобные посты. Давайте будем уважать чужие вкусы и объяснять к чему могут привести подобные высказывания.
