Shah Rukh and I had no fight: Shirish Kunder Farah Khan's husband Shirish Kunder has been in the news lately for his wife's best friend Shah Rukh Khan preferring not doing his upcoming film Joker. However, he is keeping all that aside and getting ready with the pre-production work. In conversation with TWF correspondent Vickey Lalwani. Firstly Congrats! You are becoming a father soon... Thank you. Yes, it's true. And Farah and I are very excited about it. When is your next film Joker starting? The pre-production work on Joker has already started. Joker will go on the floor in early 2009, and the entire film will be shot in a single stretch. It is a very ambitious venture being made on a mammoth scale. Because of the scale and the nature of the film, and all the intricate work involved, we are dedicating a decent amount of time for pre-production. The film is high on visual-fx and stylised AXN sequences. We intend to set some technical benchmarks with this film. We are working on a quite an innovative style of visual treatment for the film. Somewhat like Spiderman meets 300. Acquiring the title Joker itself has been an interesting journey? Yeah. The title was in possession of Ratan Jain. When I spoke to him, he graciously gave me the consent to use the title. But even before I could start celebrating, I learnt that Vashu Bhagnani and Vikas Mohan had also applied for the same title. So I needed their consent as well. But when I spoke to them, both of them immediately gave me the consent to use the title. Now thanks to all three of them, I am finally free to call my film Joker. It was reported somewhere that you have tied up with a corporate house for the film? Who is this corporate house? I haven't tied up with any corporate house yet, but yes, there are plans to do so. What is Joker about? Joker is a Superhero AXN film. The film deals with global warming and its consequences but in a very entertaining manner and not in a preachy way. Right from the conception, Joker has been planned as a trilogy. Joker 2 and 3 will follow soon after Joker. Wasn't Joker going to be your first film actually? Yes. I had first worked on the idea of a Superhero film Joker in 2003. But at that time for a newcomer to sell the idea of a Superhero film was a distant dream. But Rakesh Roshan has opened the doors for this genre by making Krrish. So now I am going ahead with my dream project after four years of its initial conception. Also, now that I have done Jaaneman and people have seen it, people take my vision and conviction more seriously. Who is doing the central role in Joker? Akshay Kumar has been finalised to play the title role of the Superhero Joker. The character needs an actor who is not only brilliant in action, but also adept in comedy. And Akshay suits the role to perfection. Also I share an extremely good working equation with Akshay and am very comfortable with him. How many big actors in the main cast of the film? The rest of the main cast will include another good actor to be cast in a negative role. It is a very challenging role to play. Hence it needs a brilliant actor, who is also comfortable with AXN. And a major female lead needs to be cast opposite Akshay. SRK is not doing it. You had a fall-out with him? Shah Rukh and I have had no fall-out. No showdown. Shah Rukh has already clarified on this and I second it. Were you satisfied with the reviews and collections of Jaaneman? Not really. But then the reviews and collections do not take into consideration the conditions under which the film is made. The experience has made me stronger, wiser and capable of working against any odds. Fair enough. So now with my dream project Joker, I intend to achieve on screen what I have actually conceived, without any compromise, and showcase the kind of work that I am truly capable of. The editor of Main Hoon Na, Aankhen, Calcutta Mail, Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche and Armaan got engaged to choreographer turned director Farah Khan in June. The couple has been dating for seven months now, and hope to get married soon. But the date, Shirish says, is Farah's decision. The couple had taken off to Goa for a break. And that was when he slipped the ring on her finger. "We didn't have time to go abroad. So we chose Goa. Goa is a romantic place, isn't it?" he blushes. The 31-year-old Mangalorean can't recollect the day he got engaged to Farah. "It was a very private thing," he says. "There were only the two of us. We didn't tell anyone because we didn't want others to know about our private lives." Shirish has known Farah professionally for over four years. They worked closely on Farah's directorial debut Main Hoon Na. But it was not during the shooting in Darjeeling that love knocked on their door. It was when they worked on the film's promos that Farah and Shirish got together. "I have always been in awe of her," he says. "She's very talented. We have a lot of mutual interests. We can go on and on talking about work. She's the best person I've ever met!" Shirish earned notice in the movie industry when he edited Main Hoon Na and Kamal Haasan's Tamil film, Virumaandi on location. "I was getting bored sitting in a room, editing the same old stuff. I wanted to try something different. That's when I came up with the idea of editing on location. The only problem was we didn't have the equipment for that," Shirish explains. That's when his skills and background as an electronic engineer came into play. Shirish has no formal training in cinema. Yet, he sounds very confident when he talks about films. Editing on location, he says, ensures that there is no wastage of film and time. "Most directors shoot a scene from all possible angles. Then it is up to me to choose the right ones and make it into a proper scene. This happens when a director is not clear about what he wants. But Farah was very clear. The fact that she was a first time director had nothing to do with it. You either have that knack or you don't. Most directors don't have it and keep making the same mistakes over the next 10 years. "If we had doubts in a couple of places, we would take options. But most directors take options throughout the film! That's why it takes 200 days to shoot a film in India. And we have the worst films being shot for so many days," he says. "We are spending enough money but we are shooting crap!" Before Shirish entered the film industry in 1997, he worked in Motorola for three years. "I was always inclined towards films. While doing engineering, I also directed plays. But I had no contacts in the industry. After a point, my frustration built up and I could not continue [at Motorola] anymore. I quit and decided to give films a shot." He started as an assistant editor at Anupam Kher's production house. Shirish gave himself six months to see whether his new career would be as lucrative as the previous one. He tried his hand at scripting, editing and assisting in television serials. "My main aim was always direction. To become a director, I thought one has to be an editor first. An assistant director does everything like coordination and the legwork for the film, but nothing specific," he explains. He approached one of the industry's finest editors, the legendary Renu Saluja. "She was editing [Subhash Ghai's] Pardes then. I asked if I could assist her. When she learnt I did not graduate from the FTII, she refused to take me in," he recalls. Shirish then gave her a copy of a television serial he had edited. After a month, he was a part of her team. He assisted her on an Italian film, Senso Unico and on Dev Benegal's Spilt Wide Open. It was during the filming of her husband Sudhir Mishra's film Calcutta Mail that Renu succumbed to cancer. That turned out to be Shirish's first film. "I did not assist her on any commercial film. But all my films have been commercial. So I had no clue how to edit one (a commercial film) in the beginning. But I have no regret of not undergoing formal training in editing. Those who did, did it the conventional way. I always came up with new ways because I didn't have a reference to anything," he says. He learnt a lot from Renu. For one, she taught him to be an editor, not an operator. "We have only operators in the industry," Shirish says candidly. "I'll tell you the difference. Renu was an editor. I followed her technique. The director gives me a tape of what has to be edited. I make a cut, then show it to him. If he wants to incorporate something more, we do that. What most people do is they sit with the director and the director tells them what he wants and what he doesn't. This person is simply an operator. I take films only on the condition that I edit on my own. I have made mistakes earlier when the director thought I was an operator. I walked out of those films. That's not editing. Anyone can do that." Doesn't he feel the heat from actors who don't like their scenes being chopped off? "This generally happens in two or more hero projects. I don't have the authority to refuse actors. That's the director's job. But if the director doesn't [refuse the actor] and if he's okay with screwing his film, I can't help it!" Shirish is as straightforward as they can get. "Many of my films have not worked. One comes to know in the first [shooting] schedule whether the film will work or not. If it doesn't work, I usually warn the director. But if they insist on it, I just pass on the film to my assistants to edit, and take my cheque! It's really a waste of time! Most people don't realise that they're making a bad film," he says. The fact that ultimately the credit for the film's editing goes to him does not bother him. "That can't be helped. I may do 10 bad films but people will remember that one good one that I did. This goes for all film professions. A R Rahman will give music for one bad film like Lakeer just for the money. Tomorrow, he'll make music for a hit film and everyone will fall at his feet again! "I did some good editing in Calcutta Mail and Na Tum Jaano Na Hum. But the films didn't work because of a bad script. If the film don't work, it's called a bad film. Initially, you feel bad about it. Then you get used to it," he smiles. His cynical mood changes when you ask him about Main Hoon Na. "Remember the fist fight in the climax between Shah Rukh Khan and Suniel Shetty? Shah Rukh wanted to do this differently and went through many Hollywood films. He is very technically inclined, so I had this idea," Shirish explains. "If you see the scene carefully, there is no single shot of Shah Rukh actually hitting Suniel. We've done it like a flicker effect. We've taken shots of Shah Rukh's face first, then his fist, and then the fist landing on Suniel's cheek. So it gives the illusion of a fight, whereas they are not actually hitting each other." Shirish, who also executed the film's sound design, continues: "In the action sequence at the beginning of the film, there is a shot where Suniel shoots Naseeruddin Shah. There is a lot of noise in the background as the others are shooting at each other. But when Suniel's bullet touches Naseer, I put off all the sound. Then I turned on music, that of a female vocalist. There's an emotional bit where Shah Rukh looks at his father dying. The music heightens the drama. But in the background, everyone is still fighting. Then Shah Rukh sees Suniel running away and starts chasing him. That's when the noise of the bullets comes back, and we get back to reality," he concludes. This is the first film in which he got credit for the sound design. "I've done sound for films like Aankhen too. Before I showed an edited part to the director, I would also incorporate sound effects and the backyard music so that it looked like a final product. Then the director would take it to maybe the music director and say, 'Aise hi kar lo' [Do it like this]." Besides Main Hoon Na, Shirish also did the promos for Priyadarshan's Hera Pheri. "I didn't do promos for films in between because some were not worth putting in extra effort," he says. Then he continues excitedly, "I tried a new idea for the promos and after that, other films like Lakshya and Hum Tum started copying us! What we did is, we gave a story hook to the audience. Usually, the makers put the best shots of the film in the promos and show it to the audience. But the audience really has no clue what the story is. I could have done that. A few shots of Shah Rukh Khan would sell a film. But I wanted to try something different. So we showed Shah Rukh looking like a geek going to school. So to the audience, it looks like a budha [an old man] is going to school. Then we changed gears. In the second set of promos, we show him as an army officer on a mission. This makes the audience get involved in the story."

Kunder is currently busy with Joker’s casting and pre-production. Speaking to Businessofcinema.com, Kunder says, “Prince of India is an epic action drama. It is a fiction film and will belong to the genre of the Hollywood film, 300. I have locked the story and screenplay of the film, but will commence its casting only after work on Joker is through.” So now, while Joker will be a futuristic film, Prince of India will be a stylized period film, and both the films will have a huge doze of visual effects in them. A few months earlier Kunder had announced his own film production company- Shirish Kunder Film Company Pvt. Ltd. While he is still busy setting up his office and making appointments, work will start in full swing soon. “After I set up my office in a month’s time, I will spend a large part of the year 2008 to put projects in place. Then I plan to keep making films. In 2009 January I will direct Joker and by mid 2009 I will start Prince of India. Alongside, I will also be producing films for other directors and am in the process of zeroing in on scripts,” adds Kunder. About the current status of Joker, Kunder says, “I am still casting for the film. I am yet to finalise my super villain and heroine, for which I am looking for a brilliant dancer and also the second male lead.” When queried about an output deal with a corporate company, Kunder remained tight lipped. As Hrithik is already playing Akbar in Ashutosh’s film, Jodhaa Akbar, he is quite open to periodic films. Shirish has also known Hrithik for a long time and they have been having regular meetings. Well, before you start your guessing game, let us unravel the answer that he is none other than Shirish Kunder, who started his 'Bollywood ka Safar' as an editor with Sudhir Mishra’s Calcutta Mail and reached dizzying heights with his 'then-director now-wife' Farah Khan's smash hit Main Hoon Na. He also showed Bollywood as to what creative 'sets-appeal' is all about in Jaan-E-Mann. If that was not enough, then, he took yet another step towards making his career come a full circle, by forming his own production banner called 'Shirish Kunder Film Company Pvt. Ltd.', under which he is going to produce his films. Shirish, who no longer edits professionally by the way, made an exception for his wife Farah and edited Om Shanti Om which is releasing in November. In an interview with IndiaFM, Shirish Kunder talks about Om Shanti Om and his directorial ventures. Is it true that you are directing a film titled, Prince of India under your own production banner? Yes, it’s absolutely true. Prince of India will be my next film after Joker. And I am producing both these films. What is the name of your production banner? Is your brother also co-producing films with you? My brother Ashmith is a writer-editor. He is not a Producer. I have formed my own production house called ‘Shirish Kunder Film Company Pvt. Ltd.’ Who all have been signed for the film, Prince of India other than Akshay Kumar? I haven’t begun casting for Prince of India yet. Akshay Kumar has been cast for the title role of Joker. What genre do these films fall into? Joker is sci-fi action-comedy set in a futuristic era. Prince of India is an epic action-drama set in a period era. So, with my next two films, I will be exploring two diverse eras. What is the status of Joker? Joker is in the pre-production stage. Being a visual-FX oriented film, every single shot needs to be worked out intricately. It is a very time consuming process, and hence the long pre-production time. The whole of 2008 will be dedicated to it. Joker is my dream project. I cannot afford to go wrong with it. Who are you likely to sign other than Akshay Kumar in the film? Akshay Kumar is the only actor finalized for Joker so far. Am still making up my mind about the others - A Super Villain (who needs to be brilliant in action), Heroine (should be a terrific dancer), A cop (second lead), and a host of supporting actors. I am very finicky, and take a lot of time deciding on the smallest of stuff. Also, I like working with people who are very passionate about their work. And forming such a team takes a very long time. What is the story all about? Could you tell us something about Akshay Kumar’s role? Akshay Kumar plays a superhero in Joker. All I can reveal at this point is that Joker circulates around Good v/s Evil… Superhero v/s Super villain… Adrenalin pumping Action-Comedy! Do you think being the director and the editor of a film helps in executing the film better and easier? Would u be editing as well? Yes being an editor helps. An editor’s vision is very clear and shoots only what is required. In fact, knowledge of any additional craft is an added advantage to a director. In my very first film, I had single handedly did the Story-Screenplay-Dialogues-Edited-Background Music Score and directed the film. No one in India has achieved such a feat before. But now that I also have the additional responsibility of a producer, I do not intend to edit my films anymore. Are you planning to have any special tie-ups with corporate houses? Yes, I intend to, and I am close to finalizing a deal with a particular corporate house. We are working on the details now. Which other films are you likely to make under your production banner? I want to make many films, but I cannot practically direct all of them. So I am looking for like-minded people with whom I can creatively collaborate. Coming back to your two films, who will be composing the music for the films? I am still deciding on that. Haven’t made up my mind yet. When are both your films going on the floor? Joker will go on floor in Jan 2009. Prince of India will start in the second half of 2009. When will they be releasing? Joker will release in 2009. Prince of India in 2010… You have also edited Om Shanti Om, Farah Khan’s soon releasing film? Yes, I have. I do not professionally edit anymore. But Om Shanti Om was an exception I made for Farah. What is Om Shanti Om all about? To sum it up, Om Shanti Om is an excuse to entertain. How is the music of the film? I love it. It’s a complete album, with songs of every possible mood. Which is your favourite track? Deewangi Deewangi… What’s your take on Deepika Padukone as an actress? I think there has been a long gap since Aishwarya last came in. Deepika has filled that void. How was it working with the crew of Om Shanti Om? Most of the crew is the same as Main Hoon Na. I have worked with them earlier. So it was cool working with them again. Now it’s like working with your family. How do you see Farah’s career graph moving? Success and more success... Her career graph is growing vertically. And how about your career graph? Mine is growing horizontally. I am constantly exploring newer avenues. What are your expectations of Om Shanti Om? It’s a sure shot blockbuster. Why should audience go and watch Om Shanti Om? If the audience is looking for hardcore entertainment, they have no other choice this Diwali. Any other project in the pipeline? There are lot more interesting things coming up. In fact, Shirish had announced two ambitious movies under his production outfit, titled JOKER and PRINCE OF INDIA. JOKER, starring Akshay Kumar, is an action film and PRINCE OF INDIA, drama. The latest development is, before Shirish begins work on the two films, he has decided to start a quickie. And it's a comedy this time. “It's called TEES MAAR KHAN. JOKER is taking time since it's a big-budget film and the dates have to be sorted out. That's when I decided to start a third project altogether,” Shirish informs me. Shirish hasn't decided on the star cast of TEES MAAR KHAN yet. “I'll be ready with a bound script in the next couple of days and then decide on the casting. I have a few options as far as casting go. It's a solo-hero film and we plan to start in August/September this year,” he adds. When earlier Shah Rukh Khan was to play the male lead and produce the film, Akshay Kumar was a part of the project. In fact, Kunder had decided to produce the film himself. Now, Akshay has walked out of the project and Saif Ali Khan will play the title role of Joker in the film. Our source says, "Shirish had creative differences with SRK and the two had a fall-out following which, Akshay also had a change of mind.
