Something like this never happened to me" - Akshay Kumar By IndiaFM News Bureau, October 16, 2006 - 04:32 IST Jaane-E-Mann appears like one crazy ride Jaane-E-Mann is all about a triangle love story between a dude and a nerd. Salman is the dude. I play the nerd. Priety Zinta is the girl we both fall in love with. The movie starts from 1970s and goes ahead another 15 years in the film. I have three kinds of looks in the film. This nerd who was in college eventually becomes an astronaut in NASA. How his love story takes shape forms the crux of Jaan-e-mann. How would you define your character in the film? Definition I have already given. Like I said earlier, I play a nerd. It was quite difficult to do that. It was not an easy job to be playing a person rejected by every woman, who does not have a date with him. Something like this never happened to me, so it was quite a difficult job to play a character like this. I managed it, thanks to my director who had confidence in me and also to the producer who believed I could perform this very heavy duty and difficult role. It is your second film with both Salman and Preity. How has the experience been so far? Priety, yes this is my second film. I started with Sangharsh. It was the film where I started taking acting seriously. It was a film where I took acting as a real profession. Earlier I used to act to earn money. But with Sangharsh things changed. Me and Preity have both evolved and turned out in different ways. She has gone ahead and has become a very great actor. She got all the support from Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra. She belongs from that school and I am still waiting to get admission in that school. I fondly call her Basanti because she keeps on talking all the time. She has a lot of things to talk about. Any topic you give her, she has a lot of things to say. I really enjoy working with her. Salman is a great co-actor. We enjoy working with each other and I feel we share a great chemistry together on screen. People liked us in our first movie and will like us again here. Anupam Kher has a complete make over. He plays a dwarf. What do you have to say about that? Yes he is playing a dwarf. It was a very hard role for him. Not only to enact but it was physically very hard to play a dwarf as all throughout he had to walk on his knees wearing green colored socks so that they could graphically remove the leg. It was quite a difficult task to walk on the knees and even dance and say your lines and even remember your lines. Hats off to Anupam Kher, he has done it brilliantly. I was amazed as to how he could do it and how he could perform it. Tell us about Shirish Kunder Very rarely you come across with a new director who is a genius. Shirish is a genius. The way he has conceived the film is extra ordinary. I would proudly say that this man with this film is going to change the level of Indian cinema. He is going to bring it to the next level. So I am very proud of being a part of Jaan-E-Mann. Did you help him editing the film? No he himself is a very good editor. He did not require my help. I don’t think so he needed my assistance. You now seem to be Sajid Nadiadwala’s new lucky mascot. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, now Jaan-E-Mann and you are also doing Hey Baby for him. What do you feel? Me and Sajid are basically school friends. We go back a long way. He was my senior in Don Bosco. From there I never thought I would one day come in this line and one day meet Sajid Nadiadwala and he would make a film with me called Waqt Hamara Hai. Then we had a little break, we did not work with each other for at least about 9 years. After that we started Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. It was great and I am glad that we started working again. Tell us about the music of Jaan-E-Mann. Music is doing very well. It has some different kind of music. It has got Ajnabee which is a different song from the routine Hindi songs. It has been done in a very different way. The orchestra is different. The song has been recorded in Chennai with some different technicians coming and recording with the help of Anu Malik who is the music director of the film. There was a lot of input from Shirish while recording the songs. So Ajnabee is your favorite track? Yes Ajnabee is my favorite track. What would be the USP of Jaan-E-Mann? In Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Salman and I made people laugh. This time we will make people cry. The USP would be me and Salman coming together again. The USP also is the characters we both play in the film. It is from two different aspects of life. One is a rock star and one is a nerd. Both coming together, having a love story in between for the beautiful girl Preity. This complete package is the USP of the film. You started of as an action hero, and now you are considered one of the finest actors for romantic leads and comic leads. A conscious decision or just happened? Well I was actually bored being labeled as just an action hero. So I decided that I need a change. I desperately need it. It was a risky job to switch over because if one actor is labeled in one particular genre then it becomes really difficult to switch over. But I succeeded. A lot of people told me not to try it since everything was going well for me but I was very fortunate to come out of it and get into something different from my image. Will we see you soon in an action movie? Yes, definitely yes. I will be doing an action movie very soon. I do want to make a very hi-fi action movie and dedicate that film to my son. Don is releasing with Jaan-E-Mann. Any sense of competition? Well Don is a different kind of film. Jaan-E-Mann is different. Don is already a hit concept. It has a lot of action and is different genre from Jaan-E-Mann. So there is no competition from each other. Both the films are releasing during the festive season. So I don’t see any point having competition. What is your expectation from Jaan-E-Mann? I am expecting quite a lot from Jaan-E-Mann for a simple reason. I earlier told you about the USP of the film, the look of the film, that producer Sajid has left no stones unturned to make the movie look beautiful. We have a good product and I am very confident of this film. One of the publications said something about you and Nana Patekar. An alleged fight was mentioned. Could you clarify? There is nothing to clarify because there is nothing that happened there. Your future projects Bhagam Bhaag, Namaste London are the two movies which will be my next releases. You did an album sometime back. Will you take singing as a profession? No. I did that for a good cause. I am not a good singer at all. I just did it because the song was in my mind and I wanted to bring it ahead and put it in front of the world what is there in my mind. It is not an album but just one song that I sang. The whole album belongs to Sukhbir. He has done the music and his father has sung it. Will Akshay Kumar produce or direct a film? No. I just want to be happy.

Я уже говорил раньше о торговой марке фильма, что продюсер Саджид приложил все усилия, чтобы сделать прекрасный фильм. У нас отличная вещь и я в нем уверен. Leetah: Недавно посмотрела фильм "Не пытайся меня переиграть" с Акки и Саифом. Кино показалось немного наивным, но Акки с Саифом - это нечто. Открыла для себя эту пару (лучше поздно, чем никогда, правда ). Смотрела вместе с мужем, который сказал, что "они созданы друг для друга и вполне могли бы участвовать в номинации на лучшую пару Болливуда" (вроде бы нигде не сказано, что это должны быть обязательно мужчина и женщина). Так вот, в свете этих событий хотела бы спросить у людей знающих, чего еще можно было бы с ними посмотреть такого легкого, искрометного, чтоб мужу можно было показать и не очень старенькое. Вот сколько критериев , надеюсь не очень трудную задачу поставила. Буду очень благодарна за совет.

Main Khiladi Tu Anari - (Не пытайся меня переиграть, 94) Tu Chor Main Sipahi (Жаркая схватка, 96) Keemat: They are back (Цена жизни, 99) Arzoo (Желание, 99) ну и теперь они подписали контракты на проект, который выйдет в начале след. года. Akki: Юльчик, да все сразу обещают треугольник Акки+Саиф-Карина (причем, я надеюсь на химию именно в таком порядке ), ну и экшен забойный. о чем конкретно кин, пока не знаю.

wichy: Akshay to perform extreme sports in Thums Up ad By IndiaFM News Bureau, March 10, 2007 - 05:37 IST Akshay Kumar has been the popular celebrity brand ambassador for Thums Up, performing extreme stunts and high-adventure action. But now, the brawny actor is going to take this act to the next level in the new campaign for cola-drink Thums Up. He will be performing the extreme sport of Yamakasi in the television commercial, the tagline being “Anything for Thunder”. According to the company, this sport has never before been seen in India. Yamakasi literally means "strong body, strong spirit, strong person", though in French usage its meaning is closer to "high energy". Akshay, who is trained in martial arts, is said to be the perfect endorser for Thums Up as his personality matches with the brand personality. This Thums Up commercial is slated for a summer release this year. Akshay recently also did an ad for Microsoft’s hit brand X-Box 360 with cricketer Yuvraj Singh. He also did a campaign for Bagpiper. Adlabs never signed a deal with either Hrithik or Akshay on paper. An industry source says, “Initially, everything was hunky-dory. But after stories about Hrithik Roshan’s Rs 36 crore three-film contract appeared in the press, talks between him and Adlabs soured. Presently, no such deal exists.” When asked about the status of Roshan Jr’s deal, Adlabs chairman and managing director Manmohan Shetty tells us, “I have no clue how the news got splashed all over the media. The fact is that it is only a proposal. If anything significant happens, we will announce it. As of now, I have nothing to say on this.” Now, even Akshay Kumar’s Rs 20 crore deal with Adlabs seems to be in jeopardy. He was to star in four films to be produced by Vipul Shah (the first of which is Namastey London, releasing this Friday, which he has also directed) and presented by Adlabs But Praveen Nischol, CEO of the Film Production Division, says that Adlabs never had a deal with Akshay to begin with. “The deal was with Vipul Shah, and he backed out,” he says. When contacted, Vipul explains, “Akshay was to star in all four films with Adlabs, but I realised this would not be an easy task. It wouldn’t have been possible for me to produce four films in one year. The quality of work would have suffered. Вроде как тоже ее отыграли назад - Випул Шах решил, что не осилит 4 фильма за один год, качество фильмов пострадает.

While the schedule is expected to begin in September, its leading lady has not been finalised yet. And by end-2007, Kumar will return to action, the genre he started off in. He plans to start shooting for an action film for Rohan Sippy, to be directed by Nikhil Advani. Reportedly titled Mera Naam Chin Chin Choon, 90 per cent of its shoot will be in China. Deepika Padukone, who will debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om, has been signed on to play the lead opposite Kumar. “Deepika has a double role in it. Parenthood teaches you responsibility and makes you grow up and Aarav my son has brought that stability in my life. So when I read the script, it made me react instantly to it only because of the relationship me and my son share with each other. Of course, the film was like my first film. Everyone with whom I worked was a newcomer for me because I was working with the entire cast and my director Sajid Khan for the first time. I've known Sajid for more than two decades and I knew that nobody could have made a film with a combination of comedy and sensibility with such responsibility. Nobody could have made a film with a combination of comedy and sensibility with such responsibility like Sajid has. Isn't Heyy Babyy a remake of Hollywood film Three Men and a Baby? You can call it a remake but I think it's not. Yes, I do agree that there are three men - Me, Fardeen and Riteish along with a baby. But that's it. The characters might be the same but the story isn't. The film will make you laugh but it might make you cry too. You never know. Describe your role in the film. I play a generation-X, very shallow, selfish to core and a future without any goal kind of a guy. Wow! What a description. (Laughs) Then this baby comes in our life and the transformation which all the characters including mine takes place, is something that everyone should look forward to. There isn't much to describe any character in the film but is more to look forward to as I said earlier. How was your first time with Riteish, Fardeen and Vidya Balan? To be honest with you, it was a bit difficult working with all of them for the first time when we started shooting but then it was all smooth. We had a blast together. Riteish is great with comedy and surprisingly Fardeen is superb in Heyy Babyy. The characters might be the same as ‘Three Men and a Baby’ but the story isn't. Filming with a baby is the toughest part. Did you learn anything from the youngest member of the cast? I learned how to be a super star because the baby was the real hero of this film. Even the name of the film is Heyy Babyy. The baby had two nurses and a doctor with it. The baby could wake up anytime it wanted to, shoot only two hours a day, could vomit on anybody and would get everything when it wanted. Now you tell me, isn't the baby a real super star? We can learn so much from a super star, can't we? When is Akshay Kumar going to kick the baddies and punch the villains next? I am going to start a full fledged action film next year and believe me, I am itching to get back to action. My next film which will be released after Heyy Babyy will most probably be Bhool Bhulaiya and the next two films after that which I have signed are Made in China and Singh is King. What makes the song very special in which you, Riteish and Fardeen do a full monty? I think there are so many women who do item numbers in films and it's time that we men put on high heels and start shaking our bum. Obviously, this is in context to the film only but we do this particular full monty song to earn money for the upbringing of the baby. What is different working with a first time director like Sajid Khan whom you know since more than twenty years as a friend? Sajid is a guy who is born with a funny bone. I think the Indian Film Industry should be proud of him, because he is an exceptionally good actor who has turned into an extraordinary director. Do you miss your partner in crime Paresh Rawal in Heyy Babyy? Yes, I've enjoyed working with him in so many films we've done together which I can't even remember now. But I do miss him and his company. Actually, I am also looking forward to Bhool Bhulaiya in which we both will be seen together again. We all know what Sanjay Dutt is going through in what's considered to be the most difficult phase of his life. What do you think will happen next? All I know is that I am waiting for Sanju to come out in the open air again and face the camera. My heart says that he is going to come out again and come out stronger. He will soon be in action. He has gone through a lot and we all can see it. I pray to God for him and hope the best for him. Why should one go and watch Heyy Babyy? There are many reasons why one should go and watch this film. One because it has a combination of sensitivity and humour. Two, because every member of the family whether it's your dad, mom or even grand parents, they will enjoy this film. Three, because there is a lot of old school humour in Heyy Babyy and everybody loves a bit of slapstick comedy. Earlier I've only done films with situational comedy. Lastly, I will say that Heyy Babyy is the funniest film that will make you cry. Heyy Babyy is the funniest film that will make you cry. Where do we see Akshay Kumar five years from now? I might still be struggling to survive in this industry. Any message for your fans? Transformation is the most important thing when a man becomes a father. I have been through it and I hope so have many others who are reading this interview. I had taken Aarav and his friends for a film and the moment the trailer came on the kids started clapping. They demanded an encore so they had to re-run it. He was like a proud son when he saw his father on screen. He thoroughly enjoyed the trailer. He laughed the hardest when I was being slapped. I think he enjoyed seeing his father get slapped. Does Aarav get possessive when he sees you playing daddy on screen? (Laughs) My son is four years old. He’s intelligent and knows that it’s just a movie. Which of your films does Aarav like? I don’t think he likes any of my films. He enjoys cartoons more. And I prefer that. I like children to be children. I get very disturbed when I see little kids on television wearing suggestive clothes and imitating Madhuri Dixit expressions. I feel programmes like this kill a child’s innocence. So I don’t encourage my son to watch my films. What kind of a father are you? I think I’m a great father. I’m a caring father. I like to spend as much time as I can with my son. My desire is to take him around the world before he turns 10 and I’ve already covered half the world. Were you a hands-on dad when Aarav was a baby? Did you change nappies and wake up in the middle of the night? (Laughs) Well I wasn’t as hands-on as my wife, Tina, since I was away for shooting but whenever I was home I did my share of changing nappies and waking up when he used to cry in the middle of the night. There is a line in Heyy Babyy where you say, “Men are dogs”. Do you agree with the statement? (Laughs out loud) Actually I’ve improvised the line in the film where I say that men are not dogs, because dogs are faithful. I agree with this statement. Men are not dogs, they are foxes. You stripped for a song in the film, did you enjoy taking your clothes off? It was awesome. I think we’ve had enough of girls stripping in films and it’s time we gave men a chance. I’m sure women with agree with me. I’m not a male chauvinist you see. Apparently, the baby in the film loved you the most. To be honest the baby loved Riteish Deshmukh more. Whenever we wanted the baby to smile, we would make Riteish stand in front of her. Whenever we wanted the baby to cry, we would make Fardeen stand in front of her and whenever we wanted the baby to be without any expression, I was asked to stand in front of her.

'Heyy Babyy,' he said, it is a very special movie for me, because i have done this film only for my little son Aaarav. And i did this because I had never worked with a child artiste, and with this film i have learned that how difficult is this to shoot a film with a child artiste," he said. They (producer and director) ensure everything for the baby Juhaina who has played vital role in the film. Mind you this baby is only star in the film and we had three doctors and three nurses round the clock for the baby, he said. There was no shooting when the baby was sleeping, we were instructed not to disturb the mood of baby when he was having food. All of us (Ritesh Deshmukh, Fardeen Khan, Akshay Kumar) had to wait on the set to get his mood right for the shoot. Akshay Kumar who hasn't done a full-on action film in seven years, is currently joined at the 'hype' with his lissome co-star Deepika Padukone to train in a subtle strain of martial arts known as Wushu whose chief practitioner on the large screen so far have been Jackie Chan and Jet Lee. Akshay Kumar has always idolized Jackie Chan and has to an extent, modeled his career on his Chinese peer. In Made In China he gets to do a full-on homage to his idol. "Akshay has been a martial arts student for years," director Nikhil Advani tied down by contract, says reluctantly. "The Wushu style is very big in China. Jet Li and Jackie Chan constantly practice it." Deepika Padukone is an athelete's daughter and has played badminton for several years on the national level. Боевое у-шу - это просто более высокая ступень. In spite of being one of the oldest civilisations in the world, certain parts of India still practice rituals and traditions that often cause pain to people. Bhool Bhulaiyaa highlights and tackles them. It’s a tug of war between superstition and sensibility, the mystical and the scientific. Have you seen the Malayalam original Manichitra Thazhu? No. I didn’t want to get influenced by it. It is best to create a character on my own. And I wanted my character to be an original in a remake (laughs). Bhool Bhulaiyaa is said to have supernatural elements. Do you believe in ghosts? I don’t. In our country, we go to tantriks to get rid of evil spirits, etc., but there are scientific reasons for such behaviour and that’s depicted in Bhool Bhulaiyaa. For me, God is the only superpower and creator of miracles. It was funny when were shooting in Jaipur, every night the artists would sit around and share their supernatural experiences and the next day in the film we would say we don’t believe in it. Yes, I play an eccentric psychiatrist called Aditya and for my role, I had to study a lot about various mental illnesses like multiple personality disorder, split personality, disassociative amnesia, identity disorder, etc. It was tough as I am not too fond of reading. I read books and even spoke to some doctors. I tried to understand the phenomena. Today, I know a lot about them. Did you cut co-star Shiney’s role in BB? I don’t need to cut anybody’s role. Shiney and I gelled very well. In fact, I was very happy to hear he’s got a baby girl. I just spoke to him and wished him well. I told him a baby girl would bring all of us luck. By now it's part of Akshay Kumar's folklore that he served as a cook in Bangkok and earned his way back to Mumbai to make cinematic history. Also if you look at the film's leading lady Deepika Padukone she's tall, slim and regal looking…like Akshay's wife Twinkle. A coincidence? Akshay has always liked women who are tall and in-charge. One reason why China was chosen for Nikhil's film is to tap Akshay's long-cherished yearning for a full-on martial arts film. Not having done a full action film for over seven years, Akshay has undergone training on a form of martial arts known as Wushu for Nikhil's film. "It's a very intricate art practiced on screen by Jet Li and Jackie Chan. Everyone knows Akshay is a big Jackie Chan fan. This is his chance to get even. Akshay plays a cook who goes to China. It is always great to know that the audience has put both its money and its faith on a film I have chosen to work in. As I have never wearied of repeating - hits and misses always matter and a good Friday keeps the home fires going. Tell us something about your new film MADE IN CHINA, directed by Nikhil Advani. It marks the Hindi film debut of Warner Bros and that is exciting enough for me. In the film, my role is that of a lowly Mumbai cook who is mistaken for a martial arts hero - close to my life story because I began as a cook in Bangkok and became a martial arts expert. I have Deepika Padukone opposite me. The film will give me a platform to showcase my expertise in Parkour - a physical activity that focuses on efficient movement of the body in getting across obstacles in one’s path. I first did this in a Thums Up ad last year. I am really excited about action flicks because I have returned to action after a long time. But you had almost given up action, hadn’t you? That’s right. But that is mainly because people thought I could do only action till I did YEH DILLAGI and DHADKAN with dramatic roles followed by a comedy like HERA PHERI. It is like reinventing yourself each time. That is precisely what the audience is looking for. It wants you to keep offering interesting and varied stuff, which can only happen with a bit of planning and a lot of hard work. I want to be someone to look up to and make oneself believe that - if he can do it, so can I. Did it ever occur to you to become a sportsman? To be very frank, not really. I grew up in a large family in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk and though I excelled in sports in school, I always wanted to be an actor. I am lucky to have been able to convert some of my dreams to reality. Jha, February 16, 2008 - 13:28 IST Nikhil Advani left for Shanghai on Monday, Jan 28, to shoot for the action opus Chandni Chowk To China. "We've story-boarded the entire film. The action-comedy is now coming to life. And the big news is that this would be the first film to be shot on Beijing's Great Wall Of China. Roger Yuan from Shanghai Knights will be one of Akshay's adversaries. But the main villain is being played by Gordon Lieu of Kill Bill Part 2." "Akshay Kumar will be performing huge action scenes on the Great Wall Of China. In terms of action we want to take Bollywood to another level with this one," informs Nikhil. A romantic song featuring Akshay and Deepika Padukone may also be filmed in around the Wall. "But the space for love in the plot is between the action and the comedy. The romance here has a different flavor. We finish the film in four weeks at a stretch,” warns Nikhil before taking off to China. Deepika has many difficult stunts to perform. While Akshay has been training for his action scenes, Deepika who has been shooting with Ranbir Kapoor in Australia returned on Sunday to join the unit in China. "In October and November she trained for her share of the martial arts. She needs to brush up her martial arts training. All her songs are ready and choreographed. So now that she's back she just has to start rehearsing," informs Nikhil. Said Nikhil excitedly, "This would be my fourth visit to China in four months. If sources are to be believed the promos will singularly focus on Saif and Kareena. It is only but natural that Yash Raj Films is cashing in big time on the current flavour of the season, the Saif-Kareena pairing, for their big ticket hit. However, it looks like there is another reason for Akshay being out pushed of the picture. We hear that Akshay had recently turned down a Yash Raj film, thus rubbing the Chopras the wrong way. Yash Chopra, who features at the top slot of Bollywood's power list this year, is not used to actors turning down offers. In fact, stars even juggle their dates with other banners to accommodate a Yash Raj project. A source close to the production house says, “Yes, it's true that Akshay Kumar turned down a Yash Raj film. Obviously, the Chopras did not take it too well.” Adds the source, “After watching Akshay's performance in Tashan, the Chopras wanted him to star in another project of theirs. Aditya Chopra personally narrated the script to Akshay. However, Akshay was not entirely convinced with the story of the untitled project and turned it down.” The source further says, “Aditya believes that because of Yash Raj's Dil To Pagal Hai, Akshay got a new image. He expected Akshay to say yes at least for old times' sake. Sadly, Akshay's decision caught him completely off-guard.” Looks like the Chopras are carrying out their grudge to the end. “The creative team at Yash Raj, which currently is working on the promos of Tashan, have focused on Saif and Kareena, leaving Akshay almost out of the picture. The yet-untitled film is a chick flick which tells the story of two women, one of which is played by Shilpa herself. Akshay Kumar will play the love interest of Shilpa. It’s a small but interesting role. Industry insiders tell us that the deal is done and Akshay is already on board. However, a source close to director Manish Jha said, “Yes, there is a very interesting role for Akshay in the film, and he has been approached. But everything is not finalised yet.” What makes this news a scoop is the not-so-private affair and subsequent high decibel break-up between Shilpa and Akki. The two were a much-talked about couple when Akshay had just broken up with Raveena Tandon and needed a shoulder to cry on. Initially, nobody had given much thought to the Akki-Shilpa affair as they thought that it was a publicity gimmick. However, Akshay was in no mood to hide the affair and started making public appearances with Shilpa. But, Akshay’s open declaration of love for Shilpa went completely against her career as producers ran scared, feeling that she would get married to Akshay and abandon their projects midway. The next thing we knew was that Shilpa had walked out of the relationship. After which they never worked together. Some close associates of Shilpa said that Akshay had deserted her. The reasons for the split were not too clear. Not so long ago, a UK tabloid ran lurid details of their relationship, which miffed both. The tabloid reports had said not-so-respectful things about Shilpa. After the story broke out, Akshay had told the media, “I will never talk about a lady in those terms, this is totally baseless. Akki: wichy : правда жизни в том, что тюрбан Акшай навертел, чтобы лысиной не отсвечивать... правда жизни в том, что Акшай действительно поредел. и было это заметно еще со времен Гарам масалы. вполне возможно, что и фасон сменил на короткостриженность из тех же соображений. а вот чалму в Сингхе он по роли навертел (а не по лысине ). поскольку играет сикха. там с этими сикхскими комюнити было еще столько возьни то чалму не так замотал, то священные тексты не так прочитал, то слишком бритый.. но Випул молоток. как только поступили первые сигналы, они с Акшаем сразу же пресс-конфу для народа организовали, членов и глав комюнити пригласили. объяснение дали с извинениями (мы дескать не хотели оскорбить ничьих чуйств, снимали добрый веселый кин, увы, не могем знать всех нюансов данной комюнити, просим зазвинять, ванятки, что смогем - исправим, а чего не смогем переснять по причине дороговизны проекта и невозможнсти снова улететь в Австралию, - низко бьем челом). пришлось кое-что из эпизодов переснимать, что было реально переснять.. за остальное - в фильм вставили эпизод с извинениями, если че не так... вопщем, подстраховались.

It is about a simple Sikh boy from Ludhiana, who, through his positive attitude, actions and good heart, takes on the assignment of turning around a few misled individuals from his village, who have settled abroad, in his makai ki roti-minded way. Apart from the catchy title, I hear the music of the film has been extremely well-received. When I performed in Canada as well as during my shooting in the US, I got constant reports that the music stores are running out of CDs. Through this film, people around the world will realise just how large our Sikh community is. The promoters have shown what an absolute entertainment this film will be. That explains the hype! We have all worked extremely hard to create some fun and magic for our fans. Your song with Snoop Dogg has added to the hype. It is certainly history-making. Snoop is a legend and together, we have created a never before seen or heard Punjabi and hip hop music track and video. I believe we Indians love our bhangra music and younger generations love hip hop. Even my son loves hip hop. So what better than to give audiences a taste of the new generation? Through Singh is Kinng, India has gone global. Is rap your favourite genre? I have been a huge fan of rap, R ‘n’ B and hip hop for decades. Being a Punjabi, I have loved bhangra more than anything else, and couldn’t wait to create some masti and fusion. We’ve got to make sure we keep offering our fans something new and spicy. I am touched by the song’s impact, judging from the reactions at the Unforgettable show in Toronto and the sales of the CDs. What was it like recording the song with Snoop Dogg? It was ’sizzle of all sizzles,’ believe me. He’s so cool and down-to-earth. He’s a family guy. He brought his uncle on the sets to cook his famous southern fried chicken for us. Snoop is a legend in his own right. When he saw me dressed in my sherwani and turban, he kept saying, ‘I wanna look like my brother Akshay.’ It was a memorable moment in my life. It is hard to compare the film, as it hasn’t had a chance to shine, not until August 8 when it releases. But I cannot compare it. It wouldn’t be fare to compare this film with the other movies. Hollywood stars, Sylvester Stallone and Denise Richards, are working with you in Kambakth Ishq. Yes, I am shooting for Kambakht Ishq with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone. He’s such a great guy, so talkative. He loves to tell stories of his action days. He’s very interesting and down-to-earth. Denise Richards is as beautiful as she ever was, and very confident. She’s as good as any Bond Girl. I am shooting with Brandon Routh aka superman himself, who’s a lady killer, in Universal Studios, Los Angeles. This is the first time an Indian film is being shot there with Hollywood stars. I love creating unique entertainment packages for my fans. But it wouldn’t be possible without the best producers on board like Sajid Nadiadwala. Your fans say that sky is the limit for Akshay. Well, that’s very nice to hear. I sincerely appreciate the love and prayers of my fans and well-wishers. I pray everyday to keep me grounded and humble. That’s why I am where I am. Any regrets, at this point in your career? I just want to be alive and kicking in the film industry. By the grace of God, this industry has given me much more than I deserve. But you’ve worked for it. Yes, it’s not easy. When you reach a certain position it isn’t easy to hold on to that position. It’s the crab mentality at work. When I’m told about Singh Is Kinng’s opening collections, I can only thank my audience and fans. Also, the media has been very kind to me and my film. Singh Is Kinng is not a great film. It’s an entertaining film. It’s the kind of cinema I believe in. I come from the grassroots and that’s the section I want to pay off my debts to. I don’t think ordinary people want to pay Rs 150 to watch a film that sermonises. I want my films to be stress-busters. Do you feel a lot of pressure trying to sustain box-office success? Until a day before the release of Singh Is Kinng, I was so tense I stopped talking to my wife. I become edgy before every of my film’s release. But this time, it was worse. It’s the first controversial film of my career. Most important of all, it’s my first home production. You said you’d never get into production. What changed? I’ve been in this industry for 18 years. When I got the title Singh Is Kinng, I wanted to make the film. I identify very closely with North-Indian family values. There was a time when my parents, sister and I wouldn’t miss a single Hindi film. That habit continues. While watching films every Saturday we would skip our dinner so we could afford Gurukripa’s samosas, popcorn and icecream at Roopam cinema (now closed down). How do you find the time now? I don’t know how I do it. But I have to find the opportunity to watch every film. The ones I miss I make a note of and then catch up with later. I missed Cash and Race. I watched them recently. Will you be producing more films? If I like a script as much as Singh Is Kinng, why not? If I don’t, I won’t. It’s not as if I’ve tasted blood and want more. Do you think Chandni Chowk To China will do as well as SIK? That’s a scary thought. And I don’t want to think about it. That’s my autobiographical film.
