She’s been around for so long and yet not been there. That’s how it was with me…until I did Umrao. It seemed improbable that a Tamilan girl talking Urdu would work. Similarly this South Indian girl should realize her potential in Umrao. She doesn’t need to go to Hollywood to prove herself. She’s our own. Why Bride & Prejudice? Who are these people from outside trying to tap Ash’s potential? She’s our treasure. It’s time we acknowledge her. Sanjay Leela Bhansali - “Most of Ash is lost in her beautiful face. Ash has been trained in Bharat Natyam, not Kathak, but most of the steps in Umrao Jaan came from Kathak. However, she picked up the steps quite well, she even did a 15-minute sequence at a stretch. Though she was sceptical at first about being able to do it, she managed well finally.” Bipasha Basu – “In Bollywood, I like Kajol, Manisha Koirala and Tabu. AK: Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has finally given the nod to veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal. The film to be shot next year would be an out-and-out female-oriented subject to be shot at one stretch. Says Aishwarya, “I’ve been working so hard this year that I haven’t had a chance to look at scripts. But yes, the one that Shyam Benegal has given me is very very special. We’ve been meaning to work with one another for years.” Aishwarya was earlier offered Benegal’s Chamki,his screen adaptation of Georges Bizet’s classic French opera Carmen. Laughs Aishwarya, “I don’t know how many times that has come to me. He needed to catch the mood during winter in Rajasthan. And somehow I never had that window in my schedule.” The new Aishwarya-Benegal project takes the actor into a different time zone. Explains Aishwarya, “We met in Hyderabad last year when I was shooting there and he was shooting Well Done, Abba. I hope to be able to sit down with him soon to work out the details.” Not willing to divulge any more details at the moment on the Benegal project, all Aishwarya will say is, “It’s contemporary.
