Neetu Singh in a “candid, no nonsense” interview about Rishi, Ranbir and life with them Are you nervous about Ranbir’s debut? Both my husband and I are nervous. But since I’m stronger I keep it inside while he’s a nervous wreck. He won’t even be here for the release of Saawariya. He’s off to Chandigarh for a two-month outdoor shoot. I feel the same way about Ranbir’s debut as I felt when my daughter Ridhima got married. People keep complimenting us about Ranbir. But until the film comes out we won’t know the actual verdict. Ranbir seems closer to you than to his father. Isn’t that the way it is with most children? Kids are a reflection of the mother. Both my kids are gentle and in school they never behaved like star-children. My husband’s work was such that he was never home. He never knew about homework, PTA meetings and the kids’ daily routines. We were together for lunch, dinner and vacation. Ranbir didn’t get a chance to be close to his father until he assisted him when my husband directed Aa Ab Laut Chalen. Now that my husband has been home more often Ranbir has become close to him too. He’s much closer to me. As an actress and mother do you feel Ranbir will match up to expectations? How can I say? I’m told he has a lot of grace and rhythm. And that he has a cute face and an athletic body. And he isn’t a chaap of his dad either. It’s impossible to imitate my husband. Johnny Lever once told Rishi he’s the only actor he can’t ape because Rishi is such a natural. I did 11 films with him, I should know. How do you feel about ‘Karz’ being remade? I don’t think you can replicate any of those classics. People are doing it. And I wish them all the best. Did Ranbir come and tell you he wanted to be an actor? He always wanted to be an actor. Even as a kid he’d recite Amitabh Bachchan dialogues. He’d always be dancing at birthday parties. Even now when he cries or gets angry he looks for a mirror to see how he’s looking… After being pampered at home, Ranbir had to work really hard on his first film. But I never pampered Ranbir! I pampered Ridhima because I always knew she was going to get married and go away, so I gave her everything. But Ranbir had it much tougher. I never gave him anything on a platter. Ranbir still gets a fixed pocket money. I like the ritual. Even when Ranbir is earning in crores I’d like to continue giving him pocket money. I’ve given him a good foundation in life. I’ve taught him to be nice to people, no matter what. What’s your equation with Ranbir now? We’re friends. He tells me about everything, and I mean everything… girlfriends included. I guide him. But I don’t force him to do anything. And I’ve got to see him once a day. That’s enough. I don’t want him to sit on my lap or go to movies with me. All three of us go out for dinner every two-three days. Otherwise I don’t go out much. And Rishi? Oh, he can’t do without me even for a minute. When I go for my weekly movies with friends he calls me constantly. That’s why I don’t act in movies any longer. He never stopped me. But if I were away shooting he wouldn’t be able to take it. He can’t be in the house without me. Since Rishi and I grew up together and sort of merged into marriage I don’t mind his dependence on me. By the way he looks I can see what he’s looking for in the house. Would you and Rishi like to play Ranbir’s parents? I’d like that. It should be a home production. Yes, provided my husband finds the right subject. Ranbir has a director lurking within him. One day I’m sure he’ll make a film and I’d love to be in it. Why didn’t your daughter become an actress? We never stopped her from doing anything. From childhood she wanted to do fashion designing and said acting wasn’t her cup of tea. I must say she’s very gifted and an excellent mimic. She got lots of tempting offers but desisted. And I’m happy for that. This industry is sometimes harsh on women. Men have it easier. But a woman has to be very strong to take all that goes on. Ranbir is constantly being written about. I know! The other day there was a story that he was in a fistfight with someone at a public place. In his 24 years I’ve never seen him lose his cool. Even in school Ranbir sorted out all the fights among his friends; he’s the eternal peacemaker. He came home and said, ‘Mom is that really me? I do normal things like go out with friends, have khana at a restaurant. Next thing I know they’re running me down.’ I tell him it’s part of being part of entertainment industry. Of course he can have as many girlfriends as he wants but let him have them first.

According to Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Saawariya is a simplistic young love story. Does that make Saawariya simply special? Yes. It is a special film for me, for Sonam and for Sanjay. Since, it is our debut-film it is special for us as newcomers. Saawariya is like a baby for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Saawariya is a fantastic film about an unknown time and a place never visited. The hype surrounding the film is huge and expectations from you are immense. What is going through your mind right now as we talk? Right now I am a little blank. I am in a state of shock because there is so much happening so fast, and then I dreamt of all these things while growing up, about being an aspiring actor, my first film, my first fan, my first autograph, etc. But when all of this is happening right now in front of my eyes all of a sudden I am speechless. It is quite heart warming. You are right! The hype surrounding the film and its music, its actors and the director will always be there and I hope that when Saawariya releases, the hype sustains and people are not disappointed. But when all of this is happening right now in front of my eyes all of a sudden I am speechless. Describe your role in Saawariya. The character I play is called Ranbir Raj. He is a very happy go lucky man who is also a dreamer. At the moment that's all I can reveal. We all know Sanjay Leela Bhansali as a perfectionist. Were there any signs of imperfectness from him during the making of Saawariya? No never, and not even for a second did I or anybody else see Sanjay Leela Bhansali being imperfect, because to him, work is everything. It comes before anyone else. Each frame for him is like a painting. He will never let the performers falter, the cinematography, the sets, the music; everything is done to the extent of detailed perfection. Any memorable moments you can think of during the making of Saawariya? There are plenty but one in particular I can think of right now is during the first schedule of filming, I had a long monologue to do in one shot at a dramatic pace. While doing the readings I was very scared. I questioned myself whether I will be able to do it? If yes then will it be done in one shot or not? Things like that made me wonder what will happen next. On the day of the shoot, Mr. Bhansali came up to me, spoke a lot about the scene, and then told me to give a take. So we shot it and in the second take, it was approved. The entire team started clapping. Then I remember I went to my room to eat my lunch and Mr. Bhansali came in and told me: "Today I feel an actor has arrived and I will come and have lunch with you." When you travel on the streets of Mumbai, how does it feel to see yourself wrapped in a white towel on a giant hoarding? I do not know how to express what I was feeling at that moment. However, if I were to die tomorrow and God comes to me and asks me to list the ten best moments of my life; the day I first saw myself not in the mirror but on the hoarding would top my list for sure. I always dreamt of my first banner and I remember telling Mr. Bhansali about it. So, one day he just surprised me and took me out for a drive only to show me my first billboard of Saawariya. Talking about your acting abilities, do you feel you have inherited your skills in acting or is it something you've learnt? I don't think so. Acting is not inborn and it's not a written rule that a great actor's son will be a good actor also. You have to work hard towards it. Personally, I have learnt a lot from my director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It has been a continuous learning experience from my days as an assistant with him on Black to an actor in Saawariya. Today I know acting because of Mr. Bhansali's training, guidance, and blessings. Let's talk about your co-star in the film, Sonam Kapoor. Brief us a little bit about your on screen and off screen chemistry. Sonam is an extremely warm person by heart. She is an honest and a hard working girl and has the same passion and dedication that her father has. She has brought all this along with her on the sets. She had no tantrums and no ego clashes, etc. On the contrary, she was very helpful and supportive and we both were constantly there for each other. It's also a sweet coincidence that we both are starting our film careers with Saawariya. Sonam has given a lot to me in this film and will work with her again in the near future. You've seen a 90kg Sonam while working with her on Black. When you see her now how does it feel? It feels weightless. Anyone who is overweight and has to loose so much of weight for her role requires a lot of hard work and commitment. It was a do or die situation as far as Sonam was concerned because she was trying to shed weight to become an actress. She had to look perfect and look at her now, she is looking gorgeous. It's not easy and not everyone's cup of tea. I've got so many friends who are trying to loose weight since years and it just doesn't happen. Is that the reason why you are wearing a cap in the title song holding a guitar? No not at all, yes, I do have a fascination with caps ever since I was a kid. I am not saying that I have a rare collection or something but whenever I do travel I make sure that I buy a cap or two because I like wearing caps. In the film, it's only in that particular song that I sport a cap because the character's outfit had to look like one with a cap, accessories, etc. but I am not wearing a cap throughout the film. How true is the fact that 'Ranbir Kapoor is going to set the dance floor on fire'? Oh! I think it's absolutely false. I don't consider myself as a good dancer. I have a long way to go. Right now what you're seeing in the promos is Mr. Bhansali's specialization in songs, his shot taking abilities, understanding of the moment, the look and expressions while dancing, the choreography, the sets, the way Ravi Chandran captured the songs in his lens, so on and so forth. Credit goes to all of them. I cannot take the credit for being a good dancer because everyone mentioned above have contributed a lot to it. So far from what we have seen, it looks as if Saawariya is going to be a film with blue and green color. It also looks a bit too dark. What do you have to say? Well, that is the color pallet of the film. That's the backdrop of the film. Saawariya is a very entertaining film and it's not dark at all. When you see the film you'll have a smile on your face and a tear in your eye. To promote Saawariya, we saw you, Sonam and Mr. Bhansali on the sets of Amul Star Voice of India singing along with the participants. Is this so necessary because Bhansali's previous films didn't have such kind of publicity and still did well? It is necessary now. You are right. Sonam and I are new comers and the audiences need to warm up to us and meet us so they can connect to us while they see Saawariya. These are new ways of marketing any film and if it does no harm to the film and its team why not go for it? When you work so hard you also need to be a part of the promotion and that's exactly what we were doing there. We make a film for our audiences so why not meet and greet them and be a part of them? Which is your favorite song from Saawariya? My favorite track keeps on changing from time to time. Right now I am listening a lot to 'Pari'. Saawariya is a fresh new perspective for Sanjay Leela Bhansali Films because there are many new comers in the film, from actors to music director to playback singers. Any comment? It is true and not many can do what Sanjay has done in Saawariya. The entire team of Saawariya is young and fresh. In fact, Mr. Bhansali has come out with a new thought process in Saawariya, he was more than willing to adapt to it, and that is how Saawariya was born. Mr. Bhansali is not stuck in one time zone. He likes experimenting and is giving himself space to grow which is fantastic. Filmmaking is a risk but I don't accept that. You will see big banner films with even bigger stars faring badly at the Box Office and critically and small budget films with lesser-known stars getting good reviews. I did not have an opportunity to share screen space with Salman sir but I am really close to him. He treats me like his younger brother, guides me, advices me, gives me lot of support and love. On the other hand, it was a pleasure to work with Rani Mukherji. What can I say about her, she is a great actor. I've learned so much from her. And the fact that you need to keep up with her when sharing screen space, is in itself a challenge, which has improved me as an actor. You need to keep up with Rani when sharing screen space Let's go in a flash back mode. Any of your dad's film you'd like to watch again and again? I really like his performance in Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai Any film you would hate to watch of Rishiji? That has to be Jai Hind - The pride Are you your papa's son or mama's son? I am more close to mom so I'm mama's son. I love dad too. Any memorable film you'd keep watching with Rishiji and Neetuji as onscreen couple? I would say Rafoo Chakkar The grapevine hears that you've also signed films with Yash Raj and other big directors. How far is that true? No not at all. It's false. I haven't signed anything yet. I am too busy and attached with Saawariya and anxiously waiting for the release of my debut film. Once the film releases, I'll take my decisions. As of now I am reading a few scripts but haven't committed to anyone yet. Do you think that you will have to stick to your grandfathers golden words - 'The show must go on'? We might be coming to London but it's just that we are so tied up with our last leg of promotions with so many places to go. We would love to come to London because it's one of the hubs of Indian cinema with lots of movie goers who love Indian films. We will definitely make all our efforts to go there. Why should one go and watch Saawariya? I will not say that Saawariya is a different film. I would like to say that please go and watch Saawariya because it's my first film and above all, it's a Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film and I promise you that you will not be disappointed after seeing it.

I’ve cut out chocolates, ice cream and rice from my diet, but not regular khaana. When you’re young, losing weight is easy. Actually, it’s easy if you eat healthy and work out daily. Also, it’s important to take a blood test to ensure that the extra kilos you’re carrying around are not because of hormonal imbalance or diabetes. You’re sounding like a dietician. I must have seen Mr India five million times. Every time I’d get upset because I couldn’t enter the TV set and join the other kids.. or get Calendar to cook for me. A Rishi Kapoor-Neetu Singh film? Amar Akbar Anthony, it’s the best commercial film ever made. How do you view the competition from Om Shanti Om and Deepika Padukone? Remember Gadar and Lagaan released on the same day too. It’s good to be spoilt for choice. And I don’t think of Deepika as a competitor at all. She’s so stunning.. as a model she’s learnt the ropes. She’s way ahead. Tell me honestly, wouldn’t you have wanted to romance six-pack Shah Rukh Khan in your first film? Honestly, I’m grateful that Ranbir is my first co-star because I could be myself with him.( Smiles ) Okay, so maybe I don’t have Shah Rukh but I do have Salman Khan. If not an actress, what? Devansh Patel speaks to the fresh face that's about to blossom with her debut release Saawariya come November 9. The countdown of this year's most awaited film and the most awaited debutants have begun. How are you feeling at this present moment? I am feeling a riot of emotions. I'm excited, anxious, nervous, happy... too many things yaar! Don’t ask me. It's chaos in my system right now. Tell us something about your weightless journey from Black to Saawariya. Well, first of all...it was a weight loss journey (laughs). From Black to Saawariya, it has been a giant leap for me. It was a constant high and we all were like sitting on the edge. We were constantly working on ourselves and improving. You have geniuses like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Omung Kumar, Ravi Chandran, Anuradha Vakil, etc working on you along with a brilliant co-star Ranbir Kapoor acting and improvising with you. So it's been my most amazing learning experience ever. Your father Anil Kapoor has made his own standing in the Indian Film Industry and is still going strong. Where do you think will Saawariya take you? You are right. I got Saawariya because I am Anil Kapoor's daughter and that's how I got introduced to Sanjay Leela Bhansali or you wouldn't have noticed me. Mr Bhansali has taken care of everything, right from the strand of my hair to the nail of my toe. For anything that I am in Saawariya is because of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. So whatever happens after Saawariya will hopefully be a little of something that I will put in. As of now I am here because of my father and my director. Does that mean that you never intended to join films and only because Sanjay Leela Bhansali told you that you look beautiful, you happily agreed? Yes and that's a fact. I never wanted to join films but because my father introduced me to Mr Bhansali, I happened to assist him on Black. And during the making of Black, Sanjay Leela Bhansali told me that I look very beautiful and should act in films. That's when he came up to me and told me to shed a lot of weight only to be his heroine in Saawariya, the script of a lifetime. Then how was it to be working with a tough task-master like Mr Bhansali? I've worked with him for four years and he is not a hard task-master all the time. He is very colourful and an amazing human being and likes to push me and himself harder because he wants me to be the best and treats me like his daughter. For that, I will be so ever grateful to him. Nobody can love me and support me as much as he does. He is like my Guru - my teacher. The media in London have said that Ranbir is the next Aamir Khan in the making and Saawariya is the next Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Does that make you the next Juhi Chawla? I would love to be the next Juhi Chawla, she has got the most amazing comic timing. She was also Miss India. I don't think that I will be able to achieve and reach where she is right now but if people are saying that, it's great. Describe your role and the character you play in Saawariya. The character I play in Saawariya is called Sakina. She is what love is. Sakina is innocence and love personified. If anybody needs to learn how to love then they should learn to love like Sakina does. She is so selfless and so sure about her love with no questions asked. I am very privileged to get a character with so many layers in my first film. You are lucky to be sharing screen space with both, Rani Mukerji and Salman Khan. How was your association with two of Bollywood's finest talents? I think Rani Mukherjee is soon going to be a legend. She is one of the very few spontaneous actresses and above all a very good human being. I've learnt a lot from her. She respects everybody and treats the entire crew equally. She is very self confident and she is a 'phataka'. I love her to death and she is my favourite actor. Salman Khan is a cool dude and a 'hot man'. He is the most good looking and sexiest human being ever. Is that a romantic Sonam Kapoor talking? Right now I am only talking about my work and I don't think that you will ever find my link-up's with anyone. Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh's on screen romance turned out to be an off screen marriage. Do you find yourself hooked up with Ranbir Kapoor in the near future? As I said that I will only be talking about my work for the moment. Right now I am in love with someone and that someone is my work and my film Saawariya. My favourite track from the film is 'Yoon Shabnami' and Ranbir's is 'Pari'. Which song is your favourite? I like all the songs but I can short list them into 'Yoon Shabnami', 'Jab Se Tere Naina' and 'Thode Badmaash'. If I am in a festive mood then I will listen to 'Yoon Shabnami', if I am in a love-struck mood then I listen to 'Thode Badmaash'. You never wanted to become an actress and on top of that, you were never trained. Then, how did you face the camera Well, it's a good thing that I was never trained because everything I have done in Saawariya is from my heart and has nothing to do with training. But I was only trained for one year by Mr Bhansali and a few others. I've worked behind the camera as well and have seen how actors and actresses work. So it wasn't difficult. I also think that I might be having some qualities of my father in me. We'll wait and watch. Which of your father's films would you prefer to watch again and again? There are many but I would love to watch Mr India, Viraasat, Woh Saat Din and Tezaab in order of preference. Any memorable experience while working with Ranbir Kapoor? Ranbir is one of my best friends. I was so happy to know that we both were in the same film. I could be myself with him. Ranbir is very energetic and on the other hand very comfortable to work with and thus the comfort level gets translated onscreen which you will see. You were born and brought up in a family associated with films. Did you ever attend parties with your family? No. My dad never used to take me to parties and I never got a chance to interact with the current stars like Hrithik, Abhishek, Esha, Tusshar, etc as they are all much older than me except for Ranbir. Is your mother happy with whatever you are doing? Yes, if I am happy then she is happy. She is even happier if I am studying. If you were to choose between acting and directing in your near future, which one would you go for? Definitely acting. That's my passion now. Does that mean you won't assist any director? Right now, I am concentrating on my acting. I may become an assistant director on one or two films more, hopefully with Mr Sanjay Leela Bhansali or any other director. Don't you think the competition of Saawariya and Om Shanti Om is becoming more like a thriller in our films? I think all of this is media created. Gadar and Lagaan released on the same day. Lagaan went to the Oscars and Gadar went on to break all box office records. It depends on how you take it. There will always be talks about two big releases but it's an individual opinion as to which film will thrill more. In the promos we see you wearing very traditional white and black outfits. Off screen, what are you most comfortable wearing? I am a very moody person as far as my dressing is concerned and will wear anything what makes me feel good. Any plans of coming to London for Saawariya's promotion? Yeah! I really want to visit London. It depends on what our work schedule is, but hopefully we are coming there. What is your take on director's making films specifically for the overseas audiences? I don't know about any other director but Sanjay Leela Bhansali makes a universal film and Saawariya will appeal to one and all whether they are in India, London or the U.S. We would like to end this interview with a special Diwali message.
